耶和华对雅各说：“你要回你祖先之地，到你本族那里去，我必与你同在。”

雅各说：“耶和华—我祖父亚伯拉罕的神，我父亲以撒的神啊，你曾对我说：‘回你本地本族去，我要厚待你。’

他做梦，看哪，一个梯子立在地上，梯子的顶端直伸到天；看哪，神的使者在梯子上，上去下来。看哪，耶和华站在梯子上面，说：“我是耶和华—你祖父亚伯拉罕的神，以撒的神。你现在躺卧之地，我要将它赐给你和你的后裔。你的后裔必像地上的尘沙，必向东西南北开展；地上万族必因你和你的后裔得福。看哪，我必与你同在，无论你往哪里去，我必保佑你，领你归回这地。我总不离弃你，直到我实现了对你所说的话。”雅各睡醒了，说：“耶和华真的在这里，我竟不知道！”他就惧怕，说：“这地方何等可畏！这不是别的，是神的殿，是天的门。”雅各清早起来，拿起枕在头下的石头，立作柱子，浇油在上面。他给那地方起名叫伯特利；那地方原先名叫路斯。雅各许愿说：“神若与我同在，在我所行的路上保佑我，给我食物吃，衣服穿，使我平平安安回到我父亲的家，我就必以耶和华为我的神。我所立为柱子的这块石头必作神的殿；凡你所赐给我的，我必将十分之一献给你。”

他在那里筑了一座坛，给那地方起名叫伊勒‧伯特利，因为他逃避他哥哥的时候，神曾在那里向他显现。
