Greeting
To the twelve tribes1:1 Gn 49:28; Ex 24:4; Ezk 47:13; Mt 19:28; Ac 26:7; Rv 21:12 dispersed abroad.1:1 Gk diaspora; Jewish people scattered throughout Gentile lands1:1 Jn 7:35; 1Pt 1:1
Greetings.1:1 Ti 1:1
Trials and Maturity
2Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials,1:2 Mt 5:12; 1Pt 1:6
3because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
5Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God — who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly — and it will be given to him.1:5 1Kg 3:9; Pr 2:3–6; Mt 7:7
6But let him ask in faith without doubting.1:6 Or without divided loyalties For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
7That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord,
9Let the brother of humble circumstances boast in his exaltation,
13No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God,” since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone.
Hearing and Doing the Word
19My dear brothers and sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,1:19 Pr 10:19; 17:27; Ec 5:1–2
20for human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness.
22But1:22–25 Mt 7:24–27; Rm 2:13; Jms 2:14–20 be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like someone looking at his own face1:23 Or at his natural face in a mirror.
24For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of person he was.
