Jude’s Purpose in Writing
Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share,3 Ti 1:4 I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith3 1Tm 6:12; 2Tm 4:7 that was delivered3 2Pt 2:21 to the saints once for all.
For some people, who were designated for this judgment long ago,4 Or whose judgment was written about long ago4 1Pt 2:8 have come in by stealth;4 Gl 2:4; 2Tm 3:6 they are ungodly,4 Mk 7:22; Rm 5:6 turning the grace of our God into sensuality and denying4 Ti 1:16; 2Pt 2:1; 1Jn 2:22 Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord.
Apostates: Past and Present
Now I want to remind you, although you came to know all these things once and for all, that Jesus5 Other mss read the Lord, or God saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe;5 1Co 10:1–11
and the angels6 Gn 6:1–4; 2Pt 2:4 who did not keep their own position but abandoned their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deep darkness for the judgment on the great day.
Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah7 2Pt 2:6 and the surrounding towns committed sexual immorality and perversions,7 Or and went after other flesh and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.7 2Th 1:8
In the same way these people — relying on their dreams — defile their flesh, reject authority, and slander glorious ones.8 2Pt 2:10
Yet when Michael9 Dn 10:13,21; 12:1; Rv 12:7 the archangel9 Lk 1:19; 1Th 4:16 was disputing with the devil9 Mt 4:1,10; Ac 13:10 in an argument about Moses’s9 Ps 77:20; Mt 8:4; Heb 3:2 body, he did not dare utter a slanderous condemnation against him but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
But these people blaspheme anything they do not understand. And what they do understand by instinct — like irrational animals — by these things they are destroyed.
Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain,11 Gn 4:1–17,24–25; Heb 11:4; 1Jn 3:12 have plunged into Balaam’s error11 Nm 22:5; 2Pt 2:15 for profit, and have perished in Korah’s rebellion.11 Nm 16:1
The Apostates’ Doom
These people are dangerous reefs12 Or are like blemishes at your love feasts12 1Co 11:17–22; 2Pt 2:13 as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds;12 Pr 25:14 trees in late autumn — fruitless, twice dead and uprooted.
They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars13 Is 14:12–15; Rv 1:16; 8:10; 9:1 for whom the blackness of darkness13 Mt 6:23; Jd 6 is reserved forever.13 2Pt 2:17
It was about these that Enoch,14 Gn 5:18 in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied: “Look! The Lord comes with tens of thousands of his holy ones14 Dt 33:2; Dn 7:10; Mk 8:38; 1Th 3:13; 2Th 1:7; Heb 12:22
to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly15 2Pt 2:5–6 concerning all the ungodly acts that they have done in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things ungodly sinners have said against him.”
These people are discontented grumblers, living according to their desires;16 2Pt 2:10 their mouths utter arrogant words, flattering16 Lv 19:15; Dt 10:17; 2Ch 19:7; Pr 28:21 people for their own advantage.
But you, dear friends, remember what was predicted by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
They told you, “In the end time18 1Tm 4:1; 2Tm 3:1; 1Pt 1:5,20 there will be scoffers18 2Pt 3:3 living according to their own ungodly desires.”
These people create divisions and are worldly,19 Rm 8:9; Php 3:3 not having the Spirit.
Exhortation and Benediction
But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,20 Rm 8:15–16,26–27; Eph 6:18
keep yourselves in the love of God,21 Jn 15:9–10; 1Jn 4:16 waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.
Have mercy on those who waver;
save others by snatching them from the fire;23 1Co 3:15; 2Th 1:8 have mercy on others but with fear,23 Rv 11:11 hating23 Pr 6:16–19 even the garment23 Zch 3:3–4 defiled by the flesh.
Now to him24 Rm 16:25; Eph 3:20 who is able to protect you from stumbling24 Jn 17:12 and to make you stand in the presence of his glory, without blemish24 Eph 1:4; 5:27; Php 2:15; Col 1:22 and with great joy,
to the only25 Jn 5:44; Rm 16:27 God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord,25 Other mss omit through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time,25 Other mss omit before all time now and forever. Amen.
