Sending Out the Seventy
1After this, the Lord appointed 70 Other mss read 72 others, and He sent them ahead of Him in pairs to every town and place where He Himself was about to go.
2He told them: Mt 9:37-38; Jn 4:35 “The harvest Rv 14:15 is abundant, but the workers Mt 20:1 are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest. 2Th 3:1
3Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves. Mt 7:15; 10:16; Jn 10:12; Ac 20:29
4Don’t carry a money-bag, Lk 12:33; 22:35-36 traveling bag, Mk 6:8; Lk 9:3; 22:35-36 or sandals; Mt 10:9-10 don’t greet anyone along the road.
5Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace Mt 11:26; Lk 10:21; 12:51 to this household.’
6If a son of peace A peaceful person; one open to the message of the kingdom is there, your peace Lk 7:50; 8:48; 24:36; Jn 20:19; Ac 15:33; 1Co 16:11; Jms 2:16 will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
7Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Mt 10:10; 1Tm 5:18; 2Pt 2:13 Don’t be moving from house to house.
8When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you. 1Co 10:27
9Heal the sick Mt 10:8; 1Th 5:14 who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God Mt 12:28; Lk 11:20; 17:20 has come near Mt 10:7; Mk 1:15; 1Pt 4:7 you.’
10When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say,
11‘We are wiping off as a witness against you Mt 10:14; Mk 6:11; Lk 9:5; Ac 13:51; 18:6 even the dust of your town that clings to our feet. Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’
12I tell you, on that day Mt 7:22; 13:1; Lk 17:31; 2Pt 3:10 it will be more tolerable for Sodom Rv 11:8 than for that town. Mt 10:15; 11:22,24; Lk 10:14
Unrepentant Towns
13“Woe Mt 11:20-24 to you, Ezk 16:23; Mt 23:13-16; Lk 6:24; Rv 9:12 Chorazin! Mt 11:21 Woe to you, Bethsaida! Jn 12:21 For if the miracles Ex 3:20; Lk 19:37; Ac 2:22 that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, Ezr 3:7; Jr 25:22; 47:4; Jl 3:4; Lk 6:17 they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes! Est 4:1,3; Dn 9:3; Jnh 3:6
14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment Ps 1:5; Mt 12:41 than for you.
15And you, Capernaum, Mt 4:13; Lk 4:23,31; 7:1 will you be exalted to heaven? Ac 2:33 No, you will go down to Hades! Is 14:12-15; Ac 2:27
16Whoever listens to you listens to Me. Mt 10:40; Jn 13:20 Whoever rejects you rejects Me. Mt 25:45; Lk 9:48; Jn 12:48 And whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” Jn 5:23; 1Th 4:8
The Return of the Seventy
17The Seventy Other mss read The Seventy-two Ezk 8:11 returned with joy, saying, Mk 16:17-18; Jn 12:31 “Lord, even the demons Rv 9:20 submit to us in Your name.” Jn 10:25; 14:13
18He said to them, “I watched Satan Mt 4:1,10; Ac 13:10; Rv 12:9 fall from heaven like a lightning flash. Mt 28:3; Col 2:15
19Look, I have given you the authority Mk 1:22 to trample Lk 21:24; Rv 11:2 on snakes Gn 3:16; Mt 23:33; Rv 9:19 and scorpions Lk 11:12; Rv 9:3 and over all the power of the enemy; Mt 13:39; 1Co 15:25 nothing will ever harm you. Ps 91:13; Mk 16:18; Ac 28:5
20However, don’t rejoice that Lit don’t rejoice in this, that the spirits 1Tm 4:1; 1Jn 4:1 submit to you, Mt 7:22-23 but rejoice that your names are written Ex 32:32; Neh 9:38; Mal 3:16 in heaven.”
The Son Reveals the Father

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

27He answered:

28“You’ve answered correctly,” He told him. “Do this and you will live.” Lv 18:5; Neh 9:29; Ezk 20:11; Rm 10:5; Gl 3:12

30Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead.
31A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
33But a Samaritan Mt 10:5; Lk 9:52; Ac 1:8 on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. Lk 7:13; 15:20
34He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil Is 1:6; Jms 5:14 and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35The next day Other mss add as he was leaving he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’
36“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? ”
37“The one who showed mercy Mt 23:23; Lk 1:72; Jms 2:13 to him,” he said.
Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”
Martha and Mary
38While they were traveling, He entered a village, and a woman named Martha Jn 11:1,19-20; 12:2-3 welcomed Him into her home. Other mss omit into her home
39She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s Other mss read at Jesus’ feet Lk 8:35; Ac 22:3 and was listening to what He said. Lit to His word or message
40But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t You care Mk 4:38; 1Pt 5:7 that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.” Or tell her to help me Rm 8:26
41The Lord Other mss read Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, Lk 12:22; 1Co 7:32; Php 4:6
42but one thing is necessary. Ps 16:5; 27:4; Jn 6:27 Mary has made the right choice, Lit has chosen the good part and it will not be taken away from her.”
