羅波安王在耶路撒冷漸漸強盛，繼續作王。羅波安登基的時候是四十一歲；他在耶和華從以色列眾支派中選出來，立下他名的耶路撒冷城中，作王十七年。羅波安的母親名叫拿瑪，是亞捫人。

然而耶和華以色列的神，在我父的全家揀選了我作以色列人的王，直到永遠；因為他揀選了猶大作領袖；在猶大家中揀選了我的父家；在我父親的眾子中，他喜悅我，立我作全以色列的王；

卻揀選了猶大支派，他所愛的錫安山。他建造了自己的聖所好像在高天之上，又像他所建立永存的大地。他揀選了自己的僕人大衛，把他從羊圈中召出來；

在我們神的城中，在他的聖山上，耶和華是至大的，應該大受讚美。

耶和華對撒母耳說：“你為掃羅悲哀要到幾時呢？我已經棄絕他作以色列的王了。你把膏油盛滿了角，然後去吧！我要差派你到伯利恆人耶西那裡去，因為我在他的眾子中，已經預定了一個為我作王。”

因為耶和華揀選了錫安，定意把它當作自己的居所。他說：

人要怎樣回答外族的使者呢？要說：“耶和華建立了錫安，他子民中的困苦人必在其中避難。”

那時，你在異象中告訴你的聖民說：“我幫助了一位勇士，我從民中興起了一位青年（“我從民中興起了一位青年”或譯：“我興起那從民中所揀選的”）。我找到我的僕人大衛，用我的聖膏油膏他。
