Jeremiah 第51章
The Utter Destruction of Babylon
1Thus says the Lord:
against Babylon,
against the inhabitants of Leb-kamai,51:1 A code name for Chaldea
2and I will send to Babylon winnowers,
and 51:2 [Matt. 3:12]; See ch. 15:7they shall winnow her,
and they shall empty her land,
when they come against her from every side
51:2 [ch. 2:28]on the day of trouble.
and let him not stand up in his armor.
Spare not her young men;
51:3 [ch. 50:21]devote to destruction51:3 That is, set apart (devote) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction) all her army.
4They shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
51:4 ch. 49:26and wounded in her streets.
551:5 See Isa. 54:5-7For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken
by their God, the Lord of hosts,
but the land of the Chaldeans51:5 Hebrew their land is full of guilt
against the Holy One of Israel.
let every one save his life!
51:6 [Gen. 19:15] Be not cut off in her punishment,
51:6 ch. 50:15for this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance,
the repayment he is rendering her.
51:7 Rev. 14:8making all the earth drunken;
therefore the nations went mad.
51:8 [ch. 46:11]Take balm for her pain;
perhaps she may be healed.
9We would have healed Babylon,
but she was not healed.
each to his own country,
for 51:9 Rev. 18:5her judgment has reached up to heaven
and has been lifted up even to the skies.
51:10 ch. 50:28come, let us declare in Zion
the work of the Lord our God.
Take up the shields!
51:11 See Isa. 13:17The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of 51:11 2 Kgs. 17:6; Dan. 5:31the Medes, because 51:11 [ch. 50:45] his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, 51:11 ch. 50:28for that is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance for 51:11 ch. 50:28his temple.
set up watchmen;
prepare the ambushes;
51:12 [See ver. 11above]for the Lord has both planned and done
what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
rich in treasures,
your end has come;
the thread of your life is cut.
Surely I will fill you with men, 51:14 [Ps. 105:34; Joel 1:4; 2:25] as many as locusts,
51:14 Isa. 16:9and they shall raise the shout of victory over you.
who established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
16When he utters his voice there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain,
and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
17Every man is stupid and without knowledge;
every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
for his images are false,
and there is no breath in them.
18They are worthless, a work of delusion;
at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
19Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob,
for he is the one who formed all things,
and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance;
the Lord of hosts is his name.
20“You are my hammer and weapon of war:
with you I destroy kingdoms;
21with you I break in pieces the horse and his rider;
with you I break in pieces the chariot and the charioteer;
22with you I break in pieces man and woman;
with you I break in pieces 51:22 2 Chr. 36:17; [Isa. 13:16, 18]the old man and the youth;
with you I break in pieces 51:22 2 Chr. 36:17; [Isa. 13:16, 18]the young man and the young woman;
23with you I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock;
with you I break in pieces the farmer and his team;
with you I break in pieces 51:23 ver. 28, 57governors and commanders.
25“Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain,
declares the Lord,
which destroys the whole earth;
I will stretch out my hand against you,
and roll you down from the crags,
26No 51:26 [Ps. 118:22; Isa. 28:16] stone shall be taken from you for a corner
and no stone for a foundation,
declares the Lord.
51:27 See ch. 4:5blow the trumpet among the nations;
summon against her 51:27 [ch. 50:41] the kingdoms,
51:27 Gen. 8:4; 2 Kgs. 19:37Ararat, Minni, and 51:27 Gen. 10:3; 1 Chr. 1:6Ashkenaz;
appoint a 51:27 Nah. 3:17marshal against her;
51:27 See ver. 14bring up horses like bristling locusts.
the kings of 51:28 See ver. 11the Medes, 51:28 ver. 23, 57with their governors 51:28 ver. 23, 57and deputies,
and every 51:28 [ch. 34:1]land under their dominion.
51:29 ch. 50:45for the Lord’s purposes against Babylon stand,
to make the land of Babylon a desolation,
without inhabitant.
30The warriors of Babylon have ceased fighting;
they remain in their strongholds;
their strength has failed;
51:30 ch. 50:37; [Isa. 19:16] they have become women;
51:30 Isa. 47:14her dwellings are on fire;
31One 51:31 [2 Chr. 30:6]runner runs to meet another,
and one messenger to meet another,
to tell the king of Babylon
that his city is taken on every side;
the marshes are burned with fire,
and the soldiers are in panic.
33For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:
51:33 See Isa. 21:10The daughter of Babylon is like 51:33 See Isa. 21:10a threshing floor
at the time when it is trodden;
yet a little while
and 51:33 [Isa. 17:5; Joel 3:13; Rev. 14:15]the time of her harvest will come.”
he has crushed me;
he has made me an empty vessel;
he has filled his stomach with my delicacies;
he has rinsed me out.51:34 Or he has expelled me
35The violence done to me and to my kinsmen be upon Babylon,”
let the inhabitant of Zion say.
“My blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
let Jerusalem say.
36Therefore thus says the Lord:
“Behold, 51:36 ch. 50:34I will plead your cause
and take vengeance for you.
51:36 Isa. 44:27; [ch. 50:38] I will dry up her sea
and 51:36 [ver. 13]make her fountain dry,
51:37 Isa. 13:22the haunt of jackals,
without inhabitant.
they shall growl like lions’ cubs.
and 51:39 ver. 57make them drunk, that they may become merry,
51:39 ver. 57then sleep a perpetual sleep
and not wake, declares the Lord.
40I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter,
like rams and male goats.
51:41 [Isa. 13:19] the praise of the whole earth 51:41 ver. 32seized!
How Babylon has become
a horror among the nations!
she is covered with its tumultuous waves.
43Her cities have become a horror,
51:43 ch. 50:12a land of drought and a desert,
51:43 ch. 50:40a land in which no one dwells,
and through which no son of man passes.
51:44 ver. 58the wall of Babylon has fallen.
Let every one save his life
from 51:45 See ch. 12:13the fierce anger of the Lord!
46Let not your heart faint, and be not fearful
51:46 [Isa. 37:7] at the report heard in the land,
51:46 Matt. 24:6, 7when a report comes in one year
and afterward a report in another year,
and violence is in the land,
51:46 Matt. 24:6, 7and ruler is against ruler.
47“Therefore, behold, the days are coming
when 51:47 [ch. 50:2] I will punish the images of Babylon;
51:47 [ch. 50:12]her whole land shall be put to shame,
and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
4851:48 [Rev. 18:20]; See Isa. 44:23Then the heavens and the earth,
and all that is in them,
shall sing for joy over Babylon,
51:48 ch. 50:3for the destroyers shall come against them out of the north,
declares the Lord.
49Babylon must fall for the slain of Israel,
51:49 [ver. 24]just as for Babylon have fallen the slain of all the earth.
go, do not stand still!
Remember the Lord from far away,
and let Jerusalem come into your mind:
51:51 Lam. 1:10for foreigners have come
into the holy places of the Lord’s house.’
52“Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when 51:52 [See ver. 47above] I will execute judgment upon her images,
51:52 Job 24:12; Ezek. 26:15and through all her land
the wounded shall groan.
and though she should 51:53 [ch. 49:16]fortify her strong height,
yet destroyers would come from me against her,
declares the Lord.
The noise of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55For the Lord is laying Babylon waste
and stilling her mighty voice.
51:55 [ver. 42]; See ch. 5:22Their waves roar like many waters;
the noise of their voice is raised,
56for a destroyer has come upon her,
upon Babylon;
her warriors are taken;
their bows are broken in pieces,
51:56 ch. 50:15; Isa. 59:18for the Lord is a God of recompense;
he will surely repay.
51:57 ver. 23, 28her governors, her commanders, and her warriors;
they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake,
declares 51:57 See ch. 46:18the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
58“Thus says the Lord of hosts:
shall be leveled to the ground,
51:58 [Isa. 45:2] and her high gates
shall be burned with fire.
51:58 Hab. 2:13The peoples labor for nothing,
and 51:58 ver. 64the nations weary themselves only for fire.”
59The word that Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah 51:59 [ch. 32:12] the son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah king of Judah to Babylon, 51:59 [ch. 28:1]in the fourth year of his reign. Seraiah was the quartermaster.
6051:60 [ch. 36:2] Jeremiah wrote in a book all the disaster that should come upon Babylon, 51:60 See ver. 1-58; ch. 50:1-46all these words that are written concerning Babylon.
61And Jeremiah said to Seraiah: “When you come to Babylon, see that you read all these words,
62and say, ‘O Lord, you have said concerning this place that you will cut it off, so 51:62 ch. 50:3that nothing shall dwell in it, neither man nor beast, and it shall be 51:62 ver. 26desolate forever.’
