For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

The great gift that God has for us does not depend on the law. If it did, it would no longer depend on the promise. But God gave it to Abraham as a free gift through a promise.

并且不要懒惰，却要效法那些凭着信心和忍耐承受应许的人。神应许亚伯拉罕的时候，因为没有比自己更大的可以指着起誓，他就指着自己起誓，说：“我必定赐福给你，必定使你的后裔繁多。”这样，亚伯拉罕耐心等待，终于获得了所应许的。

原来神给亚伯拉罕和他后裔承受世界的应许，并不是因着律法，而是藉着因信而来的义。如果属于律法的人才能成为后嗣，信就没有作用，应许也就落空了。因为律法带来刑罚，没有律法，就没有违背律法的事。所以，成为后嗣是因着信，为的是要按着神的恩典，使给所有后裔的应许坚定不移，不但临到那属于律法的人，也临到那效法亚伯拉罕而信的人。亚伯拉罕在神面前作我们众人的父，

向我们列祖施怜悯，记念他的圣约，就是他对我们祖先亚伯拉罕所起的誓，

有何神像你，赦免罪孽，不追究产业之余民的过犯呢？他不永远怀怒，因为他喜爱怜悯。他必再怜爱我们，把我们的罪孽都践踏在脚下，又把我们（按照《马索拉文本》，“我们”作“他们”；现参照其他抄本、《七十士译本》和其他古译本翻译）的一切罪恶都投在深海里。你必向雅各显诚实，向亚伯拉罕施慈爱，就是古时，你起誓应许我们列祖的。

既然是儿女，就是后嗣；是神的后嗣，也和基督一同作后嗣。我们既然和他一同受苦，就必和他一同得荣耀。

我不废弃神的恩；如果义是藉着律法而来的，基督就白白地死了。

你们因着信，在基督耶稣里都作了神的儿子。

他仆人亚伯拉罕的后裔啊！他所拣选的人，雅各的子孙哪！他是耶和华我们的神，他的判词充满全地。他永远记念他的约，他记念他所吩咐的话，直到千代，就是与亚伯拉罕所立的约，向以撒所起的誓。他把这约向雅各定为律例，向以色列坚立为永远的约，说：“我必把迦南地赐给你们，作你们产业的分。”那时，他们人数不多，实在很少，而且是在那地寄居的。

那些应许本来是给亚伯拉罕和他的后裔的。神并没有说“给众后裔”，好像指着多数；而是说“给你的一个后裔”，指着一个，就是基督。

因为他记念他向自己的仆人亚伯拉罕应许的圣言。

凡是靠行律法称义的，都在咒诅之下，因为经上记着：“凡不常常照着律法书上所写的一切去行的，都被咒诅。”

如果你们属于基督，就是亚伯拉罕的后裔，是按照应许承受产业的了。

律法本来不是出于信，而是说：“遵行这些事的人，就必因这些事而活。”

他扶助了他的仆人以色列，为要记念他的怜悯，正如他向我们列祖所说的，恩待亚伯拉罕和他的后裔，直到永远。”
