Rebuilding the Walls

1The high priest Eliashib3:1 Neh 12:10; 13:4,7,28 and his fellow priests began rebuilding the Sheep Gate.3:1 Neh 3:32; 12:39; Jn 5:2 They dedicated it and installed its doors. After building the wall to the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel,3:1 Neh 12:39; Zch 14:10 they dedicated it.

2The men of Jericho3:2 Ezr 2:34; Neh 7:36 built next to Eliashib,3:2 Neh 12:10 and next to them Zaccur son of Imri built.

Fish Gate

3The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate.3:3 Neh 12:39; Zph 1:10 They built it with beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars.3:3 Neh 6:1; 7:1

4Next to them Meremoth3:4 Ezr 8:33 son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Beside them Meshullam3:4 Ezr 10:15; Neh 3:30; 6:17–18 son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them Zadok son of Baana made repairs.

5Beside them the Tekoites3:5 Neh 3:27; Am 1:1 made repairs, but their nobles did not lift a finger to help3:5 Lit not bring their neck to the work of their supervisors.

Old Gate, Broad Wall, and Tower of the Ovens

6Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired the Old3:6 Or Jeshanah Gate.3:6 Neh 12:39 They built it with beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars.

7Next to them the repairs were done by Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of Gibeon3:7 Jos 9:3 and Mizpah, who were under the authority3:7 Or Mizpah, the seat3:7 2Kg 25:23; Jr 40:5–12 of the governor3:7 Neh 2:7–8; 5:14 of the region west of the Euphrates River.3:7 Neh 2:7,9

8After him Uzziel son of Harhaiah, the goldsmith,3:8 Neh 3:31,32 made repairs, and next to him Hananiah son of the perfumer made repairs. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.3:8 2Ch 32:5; Neh 12:38

9Next to them Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs.

10After them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs across from his house.3:10 Neh 3:23,28 Next to him Hattush the son of Hashabneiah made repairs.

11Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-moab made repairs to another section, as well as to the Tower of the Ovens.3:11 2Ch 26:9; Neh 12:38

12Beside him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs — he and his daughters.

Valley Gate, Dung Gate, and Fountain Gate

13Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate. They rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars, and repaired five hundred yards3:13 Lit 1,000 cubits of the wall to the Dung Gate.3:13 Neh 2:13

14Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem,3:14 Jr 6:1 repaired the Dung Gate.3:14 Neh 2:13 He rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars.

15Shallun3:15 Some Hb mss, Syr read Shallum son of Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate.3:15 Neh 2:14; 12:37 He rebuilt it and roofed it. Then he installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also made repairs to the wall of the Pool of Shelah3:15 Is 8:6; Jn 9:7 near the king’s garden,3:15 2Kg 25:4 as far as the stairs that descend from the city of David.3:15 Neh 12:37

16After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth-zur,3:16 Jos 15:58; 1Ch 2:45 made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David,3:16 1Kg 2:10; Ac 2:29 as far as the artificial pool3:16 2Kg 20:20; Is 22:9–11 and the House of the Warriors.3:16 2Sm 23:8–39

17Next to him the Levites3:17 Ezr 2:40; Neh 7:43 made repairs under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah,3:17 1Sm 23:1–5 made repairs for his district.

18After him their fellow Levites made repairs under Binnui3:18 Some Hb mss, Syr, LXX; Neh 3:24; other Hb mss, Vg read Bavvai son of Henadad, ruler of half the district of Keilah.

19Next to him Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, made repairs to another section opposite the ascent to the armory at the Angle.3:19 2Ch 26:9

The Angle, Water Gate, and Tower on Ophel

20After him Baruch son of Zabbai3:20 Alt Hb tradition, Vg read Zaccai; Ezr 2:9 diligently repaired another section, from the Angle to the door of the house of the high priest Eliashib.3:20 Neh 3:1; 12:10

21Beside him Meremoth3:21 Ezr 8:33 son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, made repairs to another section, from the door of Eliashib’s3:21 Neh 3:1 house to the end of his house.

22And next to him the priests from the surrounding area made repairs.

23After them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. Beside them Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house.

24After him Binnui3:24 Ezr 8:33 son of Henadad made repairs to another section, from the house of Azariah to the Angle and the corner.

25Palal son of Uzai made repairs opposite the Angle and tower that juts out from the king’s upper palace,3:25 Or and the upper tower that juts out from the palace3:25 Neh 12:37 by the courtyard of the guard.3:25 Jr 32:2 Beside him Pedaiah son of Parosh

26and the temple servants3:26 Ezr 2:43,55–58; 7:7 living on Ophel3:26 Ezr 8:20; Neh 11:21 made repairs opposite the Water Gate3:26 Neh 8:1 toward the east and the tower that juts out.

27Next to him the Tekoites3:27 Neh 3:5; Am 1:1 made repairs to another section from a point opposite the great tower that juts out, as far as the wall of Ophel.3:27 Neh 11:21

Horse Gate, Inspection Gate, and Sheep Gate

28Each of the priests made repairs above the Horse Gate,3:28 2Ch 23:15 each opposite his own house.

29After them Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. And beside him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, guard of the East Gate, made repairs.

30Next to him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph made repairs to another section.

After them Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his room.

31Next to him Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths,3:31 Neh 3:8 made repairs to the house of the temple servants3:31 Neh 7:46–56 and the merchants, opposite the Inspection3:31 Or Muster Gate, and as far as the upstairs room on the corner.

32The goldsmiths3:32 Neh 3:8,21 and merchants made repairs between the upstairs room on the corner and the Sheep Gate.3:32 Neh 3:1; Jn 5:2
