John16

1“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.
216:2 ch. 9:22; 12:42They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, 16:2 See ch. 4:21the hour is coming when 16:2 Acts 8:1; 9:1; 26:9-11whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.
3And they will do these things 16:3 ch. 8:19, 55; 15:21; 17:25because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4But 16:4 ch. 13:19; 14:29I have said these things to you, that when 16:4 See Luke 22:53their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, 16:4 [Matt. 9:15]because I was with you.
5But now 16:5 See ch. 14:12I am going to him who sent me, and 16:5 [ch. 13:36; 14:5]none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
6But because I have said these things to you, 16:6 ver. 22; ch. 14:1sorrow has filled your heart.
7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for 16:7 ch. 7:39if I do not go away, 16:7 ch. 15:26; [ch. 14:16] the Helper will not come to you. But 16:7 [Acts 2:33] if 16:7 ch. 14:2I go, 16:7 See ch. 14:26I will send him to you.
816:8 [ch. 8:28] And when he comes, he will 16:8 [ch. 8:46]convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
9concerning sin, 16:9 ch. 8:24; [Acts 2:36, 37; 1 Cor. 12:3]because they do not believe in me;
1016:10 [Acts 17:31] concerning righteousness, 16:10 ver. 16, 17, 19because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
1116:11 See ch. 12:31concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world 16:11 [Col. 2:15; Heb. 2:14]is judged.
12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13When 16:13 See ch. 14:17the Spirit of truth comes, 16:13 See ch. 14:26he will 16:13 Acts 8:31; [ch. 1:17; 14:6; Ps. 25:5] guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but 16:13 [ch. 15:15]whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
14He will 16:14 See ch. 7:39glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
1516:15 ch. 17:10All that the Father has is mine; 16:15 ver. 14therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy
1616:16 See ch. 7:33“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and 16:16 [ver. 22]again a little while, and you will see me.”
17So 16:17 [Mark 9:10, 32] some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, 16:17 ver. 16‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, 16:17 ver. 10‘because I am going to the Father’?”
18So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? 16:18 [ch. 14:5]We do not know what he is talking about.”
1916:19 [ver. 30]; See ch. 2:24, 25Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?
20Truly, truly, I say to you, 16:20 Matt. 9:15; Mark 16:10; Luke 23:27you will weep and lament, but 16:20 [Rev. 11:10] the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but 16:20 Jer. 31:13; See Matt. 5:4your sorrow will turn into joy.
2116:21 Isa. 26:17; [Ps. 48:6; Isa. 13:8; 1 Thess. 5:3; Rev. 12:2]When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
2216:22 ver. 6; [2 Cor. 6:10] So also you have sorrow now, but 16:22 [ver. 16] I will see you again, and 16:22 Ps. 33:21; Isa. 66:14; Luke 24:52; Acts 2:46; 8:8, 39; 13:52your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
2316:23 ver. 26; ch. 14:20In that day you will 16:23 ver. 19, 30ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, 16:23 See ch. 14:13whatever you ask of the Father in my name, 16:23 ch. 15:16; [Eph. 1:3]he will give it to you.
24Until now you have asked nothing in my name. 16:24 See Matt. 7:7Ask, and you will receive, 16:24 See ch. 15:11that your joy may be full.
I Have Overcome the World
25“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. 16:25 ver. 2The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.
26In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;
2716:27 [ch. 14:21, 23; 17:23] for the Father himself loves you, because 16:27 ch. 21:15-17; [1 Cor. 16:22] you have loved me and 16:27 ver. 30; ch. 17:8have believed that I came from God.16:27 Some manuscripts from the Father
2816:28 ch. 8:14; 13:3I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now 16:28 See ch. 14:12I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
29His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not 16:29 ver. 25using figurative speech!
30Now we know that 16:30 ch. 21:17; See ch. 2:24, 25you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that 16:30 [ver. 27, 28; ch. 3:2]you came from God.”
31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
32Behold, 16:32 [ch. 4:21, 23] the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when 16:32 Matt. 26:31; Mark 14:27you will be scattered, each to his own home, and 16:32 [Isa. 63:5] will leave me alone. 16:32 See ch. 8:16, 29Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
33I have said these things to you, that 16:33 See ch. 14:27; Col. 3:15in me you may have peace. 16:33 [ch. 15:18-21] In the world you will have 16:33 Rev. 1:9; See Acts 14:22tribulation. But 16:33 ch. 14:1, 27take heart; 16:33 [Rom. 8:37; 1 John 4:4; 5:4, 5; Rev. 3:21; 12:11]I have overcome the world.”
