For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Hearing the law does not make a person right with God. People are considered to be right with God only when they obey the law.

Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works in offering Isaac his son on the altar?You see that faith was active together with his works, and by works, faith was made complete,and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works in receiving the messengers and sending them out by a different route?

and yet because we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus. This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified.

Circumcision benefits you if you observe the law, but if you are a lawbreaker, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live by faith.But the law is not based on faith; instead, the one who does these things will live by them.

since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them.

since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

Everyone who believes is justified through him from everything that you could not be justified from through the law of Moses.

It is not in heaven so that you have to ask,‘ Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask,‘ Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.

For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

Then I gave them my statutes and explained my ordinances to them— the person who does them will live by them.

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,“ Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully.

Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous in your sight.

You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.

“ Not everyone who says to me,‘ Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.On that day many will say to me,‘ Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?’Then I will announce to them,‘ I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!’“ Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.”

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;

“ Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow, so that you may live, enter, and take possession of the land the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.

If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about— but not before God.For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.Now to the one who works, pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed.But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness.

I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“ What is written in the law?” he asked him.“ How do you read it?”He answered,“ Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and“ your neighbor as yourself.”“ You’ve answered correctly,” he told him.“ Do this and you will live.”But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

Listen, Israel, and be careful to follow them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly, because the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.

But he replied to them,“ My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do the word of God.”

“ As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One person speaks to another, each saying to his brother,‘ Come and hear what the message is that comes from the LORD!’So my people come to you in crowds, sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit.Yes, to them you are like a singer of passionate songs who has a beautiful voice and plays skillfully on an instrument. They hear your words, but they don’t obey them.Yet when all this comes true— and it definitely will— then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
