And Caleb said,“ Whoever attacks Kiriath sepher and captures it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as a wife.”

And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him,“ Please show us the entrance to the city, and we will treat you kindly.”So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.

And David had a craving and said,“ Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; however, David would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord;and he said,“ Far be it from me before my God that I would do this. Now David had said,“ Whoever is first to kill a Jebusite shall be chief and commander.” Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and captured the royal city.Then Joab sent messengers to David and said,“ I have fought against Rabbah, I have even captured the city of waters.Now then, gather the rest of the people and camp opposite the city and capture it, or I will capture the city myself and it will be named after me.”So David gathered all the people and went to Rabbah, and he fought against it and captured it.Then he took the crown of their king from his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and it had a precious stone; and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the plunder of the city in great amounts.He also brought out the people who were in it, and put some to work at saws, iron picks, and iron axes, and made others serve at the brick works. And he did the same to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they brought destruction on the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem.
