Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

My son, if you stop listening to what I teach you, you will wander away from the words of knowledge.

Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

If you stop listening to correction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Stop listening, my son, to discipline, And you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Cease, my son, to hear instruction Only to err from the words of knowledge.

“ Suppose there are prophets among you or those who dream dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles,and the predicted signs or miracles occur. If they then say,‘ Come, let us worship other gods’— gods you have not known before—do not listen to them. The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul.Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.

Then he added,“ Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given— and you will receive even more.

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

Stay away from fools, for you won’t find knowledge on their lips.

“ Watch out!” Jesus warned them.“ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

“ Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.

Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life.Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions.These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.

“‘ How will you do this?’ the Lord asked.“ And the spirit replied,‘ I will go out and inspire all of Ahab’s prophets to speak lies.’“‘ You will succeed,’ said the Lord.‘ Go ahead and do it.’“ So you see, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all your prophets. For the Lord has pronounced your doom.”Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah walked up to Micaiah and slapped him across the face.“ Since when did the Spirit of the Lord leave me to speak to you?” he demanded.And Micaiah replied,“ You will find out soon enough when you are trying to hide in some secret room!”“ Arrest him!” the king of Israel ordered.“ Take him back to Amon, the governor of the city, and to my son Joash.Give them this order from the king:‘ Put this man in prison, and feed him nothing but bread and water until I return safely from the battle!’”But Micaiah replied,“ If you return safely, it will mean that the Lord has not spoken through me!” Then he added to those standing around,“ Everyone mark my words!”

Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.

“ I know all the things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars.

Jesus replied,“ You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,‘ These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.Their worship is a farce, for they teach man made ideas as commands from God.’For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”Then he said,“ You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.For instance, Moses gave you this law from God:‘ Honor your father and mother,’ and‘ Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents,‘ Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear.“ All of you listen,” he said,“ and try to understand.

They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”

These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ.But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.

Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves.Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered.
