For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

因其憎惡知識、不喜寅畏耶和華、

爾素不志於學、不畏耶和華、

因厭惡知識、不以畏主為悅、

since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord.

You hated knowledge. You didn’t choose to have respect for the Lord.

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord,

Because they hated moral knowledge, and did not choose to fear the LORD,

because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

For the commandment[ is] a lamp; and the law[ is] light; and reproofs of instruction[ are] the way of life:

When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come,[ and] set them on fire: for it[ is] a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will shew them no favour.

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers[ did], so[ do] ye.Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept[ it].When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with[ their] teeth.

Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.What[ is] the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

That this[ is] a rebellious people, lying children, children[ that] will not hear the law of the LORD:Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:

But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or[ that] thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
