說了這些話以後約八天，耶穌帶著彼得、約翰、雅各上山去禱告。正在禱告的時候，耶穌的相貌改變了，衣服也潔白發光。這時候，忽然有兩個人和耶穌談話——他們是摩西和以利亞——他們在榮光中顯現，談論耶穌離世的事，就是他將要在耶路撒冷成就的事。彼得和他的同伴正在沉睡著。可是他們清醒過來時，看見了耶穌的榮光和同他站著的那兩個人。那兩個人正要離開耶穌的時候，彼得對耶穌說：「老師，我們在這裡真好！讓我們來搭三座帳幕，一座為你，一座為摩西，一座為以利亞。」他不知道自己在說什麼。他正說這些話，有一朵雲彩出現，籠罩著他們。他們一沒入雲彩中，門徒們就懼怕起來。有聲音從雲中傳來，說：「這是我的兒子，我所揀選的。你們當聽從他！」聲音過後，門徒們發現只有耶穌一個人了。在那些日子裡，他們保持沉默，沒有告訴任何人他們所看到的事。

然後他除了彼得、雅各和雅各的弟弟約翰以外，不准別的人跟著。

他帶了彼得和西庇太的兩個兒子一起去，開始感到憂慮，極其難過，

這從天上傳來的聲音，是我們與他一起在聖山上的時候聽見的，

過了六天，耶穌只帶著彼得、雅各、約翰，領他們悄悄地上了一座高山。在他們面前，耶穌變了形像。他的衣服變得光亮耀眼，極其潔白，地上漂布的人無法漂得那樣白。這時候，以利亞與摩西一起向他們顯現，並且和耶穌談話。彼得對耶穌說：「拉比，我們在這裡真好！讓我們來搭三座帳幕，一座為你，一座為摩西，一座為以利亞。」其實彼得不知道說什麼才好，因為他們都非常害怕。這時候，有一朵雲彩出現籠罩他們，並且有聲音從雲中傳來：「這是我的愛子，你們當聽從他！」於是門徒們環視周圍，忽然間，再也看不到別的人，只有耶穌與他們在一起。他們下山的時候，耶穌吩咐他們，在人子從死人中復活之前，不要把所看到的告訴任何人。他們牢記這話，互相談論「從死人中復活」是什麼意思。他們問耶穌，說：「經文士們為什麼說以利亞必須先來呢？」耶穌告訴他們：「以利亞確實要先來恢復萬事。至於人子，經上怎麼還記載說，他必然受很多苦害，並且被人拒絕呢？不過我告訴你們：其實以利亞已經來了，人們卻任意對待他，正如經上指著他所寫的。」

耶穌來到他的家，除了彼得、約翰、雅各和孩子的父母以外，不准任何人與他一起進去。
