They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

信子的，有永生；不信从子的，必不得见永生，神的震怒却常在他身上。”

我看见了，就作见证说：‘这就是神的儿子。’”

他们来到约翰那里，对他说：“拉比，你看，从前和你在约旦河东，你为他作见证的那一位，他也在施洗，众人都到他那里去了。”

约翰为他作见证，大声说：“这一位就是我所说的：‘那在我以后来的，位分比我高，因为他本来是在我以前的。’”从他的丰盛里我们都领受了，而且恩上加恩。律法是藉着摩西颁布的，恩典和真理却是藉着耶稣基督而来的。从来没有人见过神，只有在父怀里的独生子把他彰显出来。

你们曾经派人到约翰那里，他为真理作过见证。我不接受从人而来的见证，但我说这些事，是要你们得救。约翰是一盏点亮的灯，你们情愿暂时在他的光中欢乐。

约翰快要跑完他的路程的时候，说：‘你们以为我是谁？我不是基督。他是在我以后来的，我就是给他解脚上的鞋带也不配。’

这一位就是我所说的：‘有一个人，是在我以后来的，位分比我高，因为他本来是在我以前的。’
