上帝的靈感動了耶何耶大祭司的兒子撒迦利亞，他便站在高處對民眾說：「耶和華上帝這樣說，『你們為什麼違反耶和華的誡命，以致不得亨通呢？既然你們背棄我，我也必離棄你們。』」他們想謀害撒迦利亞，就照著王的命令，在耶和華殿的院子裡用石頭打死了他。約阿施王不但不顧念撒迦利亞的父親耶何耶大對他的恩惠，還殺死了耶何耶大的兒子。撒迦利亞臨死的時候說：「願耶和華鑒察，為我伸冤！」

亞伯憑信心向上帝獻祭，比該隱所獻的更美，蒙了上帝的悅納，被稱為義人。他雖然死了，卻仍然藉著信心說話。

該隱對弟弟亞伯說：「我們去田間吧！」他們在田間的時候，該隱動手打亞伯，把他殺了。後來，耶和華問該隱：「你弟弟亞伯在哪裡？」他說：「我不知道！難道我是弟弟的看護人嗎？」耶和華說：「你做了什麼事？你弟弟的血從地裡向我哭訴。地張開口從你手上接受了你弟弟的血，你在地上必受咒詛。

因此，所有義人在地上所流的血，就是從義人亞伯的血，直到你們在聖所和祭壇之間所殺的巴拉加的兒子撒加利亞的血，都要歸到你們身上。

大流士王二年八月，耶和華對易多的孫子、比利迦的兒子撒迦利亞先知說：

還有新約的中保耶穌和祂所流的血。這血比亞伯的血發出更美的信息。

你要對他們說，『你們這些國民不聽你們上帝耶和華的話，不肯受管教，口中毫無真理。
