亞哈聽見這些話，就撕裂衣服，禁食，貼身穿着麻布，也睡在麻布上，沮喪地走來走去。耶和華的話臨到提斯比人以利亞，說：「亞哈在我面前這樣謙卑，你看見了嗎？因為他在我面前謙卑，所以在他的日子，我不降這禍；到他兒子的時候，我必降這禍於他的家。」

耶和華對這事改變心意，耶和華說：「這災可以免了。」

他在人前歌唱說：『我犯了罪，顛倒是非，卻沒有受該得的報應。神救贖我的性命免入地府，我的生命也必見光。』

我聽見以法蓮為自己悲嘆說：『你管教我，我便受管教，我如未馴服的牛犢。求你使我回轉，我便回轉，因為你是耶和華－我的神。我背離以後就懊悔，受教以後就捶胸；我因擔當年輕時的凌辱就抱愧蒙羞。』以法蓮是我的愛子嗎？是我喜歡的孩子嗎？我每逢責備他，仍深顧念他。因此，我的心腸牽掛着他，我必要憐憫他。這是耶和華說的。

你們要撕裂心腸，不要撕裂衣服。歸向耶和華－你們的神，因為他有恩惠，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，有豐盛的慈愛，並且會改變心意，不降那災難。

在審判的時候，尼尼微人要起來定這世代的罪，因為尼尼微人聽了約拿所傳的就悔改了。看哪，比約拿更大的在這裏！」

於是他起來，往他父親那裏去。相離還遠，他父親看見，就動了慈心，跑去擁抱着他，連連親他。

他就向耶和華禱告，說：「耶和華啊，這不就是我仍在本國的時候所說的嗎？我知道你是有恩惠，有憐憫的神，不輕易發怒，有豐盛的慈愛，並且會改變心意，不降那災難。我就是因為這樣，才急速逃往他施去的呀！
