我喜愛憐憫之心，而非祭物；我喜愛人認識我，勝於燔祭。

撒母耳說：「耶和華喜歡燔祭和其他祭物，還是喜歡人們聽從祂的話？順服勝於獻祭，聽從耶和華勝過向祂獻上公羊的脂肪。

聖經上說，『我喜愛憐憫之心，而非祭物』，你們去揣摩這句話的意思吧。我來不是要召義人，乃是要召罪人。」

祭物和供品非你所悅，你開通了我的耳朵，燔祭和贖罪祭非你所要。

你不喜歡祭物，否則我會獻上，你也不喜愛燔祭。你所要的祭是憂傷的心靈。上帝啊，你必不輕看憂傷痛悔的心。

我責怪你，不是因為你的祭物，也不是因為你經常獻給我的燔祭。我不需要你棚裡的公牛和圈裡的山羊，因為林中的百獸是我的，群山上的牲畜是我的。山中的飛鳥和田野的動物都是我的。就是我餓了，也不用告訴你，因為世界和其中的一切都是我的。難道我吃公牛的肉，喝山羊的血嗎？你要向上帝獻上感恩祭，向至高者恪守諾言，在患難中呼求我，我必拯救你，你必尊崇我。」但上帝對惡人說：「你怎能背誦我的律法，談論我的約？你憎惡我的管教，把我的話拋在腦後。

我們要全心、全意、全力愛祂，又要愛鄰如己。這樣做比獻什麼祭都好。」
