Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.

Why do we sit still? Gather together; let us go into the fortified cities and perish there, for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish and has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord.

Declare in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say,“ Blow the trumpet through the land; cry aloud and say,‘ Assemble, and let us go into the fortified cities!’

The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him,“ The Lord does not call your name Pashhur, but Terror On Every Side.For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword.

“ In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned, and travelers kept to the byways.The villagers ceased in Israel; they ceased to be until I arose; I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel.

Then I said,“ Ah, Lord God, surely you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying,‘ It shall be well with you,’ whereas the sword has reached their very life.”

In those times there was no peace to him who went out or to him who came in, for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands.

For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side

but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
