我民女歟、爾其束麻、輾轉灰塵、爾其舉哀、號咷痛哭、若喪獨子、蓋殘賊者將倏然臨我、

殘賊猝至、民必衣麻、坐於塗炭、舉哀甚慘、若喪獨子。

我民歟、當衣麻輾轉於塵埃、舉哀痛哭、若喪獨子、蓋殘殺毀滅者、忽至而攻我儕、

Put on sackcloth, my people, and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

My people, put on the clothes of sadness. Roll among the ashes. Mourn with bitter weeping just as you would mourn for an only son. The one who is going to destroy us will come suddenly.

Oh, my people, dress yourselves in burlap and sit among the ashes. Mourn and weep bitterly, as for the loss of an only son. For suddenly the destroying armies will be upon you!

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

Daughter of my people, put on sackcloth And roll in ashes; Mourn as for an only son, A most bitter mourning. For suddenly the destroyer Will come against us.

O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth And roll about in ashes! Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us.

O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

O daughter of my people, gird[ thee] with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning,[ as for] an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.

So I said,“ Oh, my dear people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with painful sobs as though you had lost your only child. For any moment now that destructive army will come against us.”

Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

“ And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

For this put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned back from us.”

and shout aloud over you and cry out bitterly. They cast dust on their heads and wallow in ashes;they make themselves bald for you and put sackcloth on their waist, and they weep over you in bitterness of soul, with bitter mourning.

The hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children; they became their food during the destruction of the daughter of my people.

For the chastisement of the daughter of my people has been greater than the punishment of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and no hands were wrung for her.

Upon all the bare heights in the desert destroyers have come, for the sword of the Lord devours from one end of the land to the other; no flesh has peace.

But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.

My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out to the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because infants and babies faint in the streets of the city.

“ You shall say to them this word:‘ Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound, with a very grievous blow.

For the wound of the daughter of my people is my heart wounded; I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people not been restored?Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

“ And those pierced by the Lord on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.“ Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come, and you shall fall like a choice vessel.

Crash follows hard on crash; the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are laid waste, my curtains in a moment.

In that day the Lord God of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth;

They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying,‘ Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.

therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach in a high wall, bulging out and about to collapse, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant;

Even jackals offer the breast; they nurse their young; but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

“ For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears; for a comforter is far from me, one to revive my spirit; my children are desolate, for the enemy has prevailed.”

my eyes flow with rivers of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will make lamentation like the jackals, and mourning like the ostriches.For her wound is incurable, and it has come to Judah; it has reached to the gate of my people, to Jerusalem.Tell it not in Gath; weep not at all; in Beth-le-aphrah roll yourselves in the dust.

I have made their widows more in number than the sand of the seas; I have brought against the mothers of young men a destroyer at noonday; I have made anguish and terror fall upon them suddenly.

Therefore I said:“ Look away from me; let me weep bitter tears; do not labor to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.”

She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies.

At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem,“ A hot wind from the bare heights in the desert toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow or cleanse,

Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people from the length and breadth of the land:“ Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?”“ Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images and with their foreign idols?”

Tremble, you women who are at ease, shudder, you complacent ones; strip, and make yourselves bare, and tie sackcloth around your waist.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Consider, and call for the mourning women to come; send for the skillful women to come;let them make haste and raise a wailing over us, that our eyes may run down with tears and our eyelids flow with water.For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion:‘ How we are ruined! We are utterly shamed, because we have left the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.’”Hear, O women, the word of the Lord, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; teach to your daughters a lament, and each to her neighbor a dirge.For death has come up into our windows; it has entered our palaces, cutting off the children from the streets and the young men from the squares.Speak:“ Thus declares the Lord,‘ The dead bodies of men shall fall like dung upon the open field, like sheaves after the reaper, and none shall gather them.’”

As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.

“ I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains, and a lamentation for the pastures of the wilderness, because they are laid waste so that no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard; both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled and are gone.

And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity.All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water.They put on sackcloth, and horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and baldness on all their heads.

Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
