Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.

我必施展我的威風做你的前驅；凡你所到的地方、我必使那裏的眾民都潰亂；使你一切的仇敵都轉背而逃。

猶大四圍各地的列國都起了畏懼永恆主的心，不敢同約沙法交戰。

在約但河西邊的亞摩利人那些王、和靠海的迦南人那些王、聽見永恆主使約但河的水從以色列人面前乾了、等着我們過河，他們就因以色列人的緣故而膽戰心驚，不再有勇氣了。

他們震懾恐懼，因為上帝在義人的族類中。

對他們說：『我知道永恆主已經把這地賜給你們，並且有一種懼怕你們的恐怖情緒落到我們心裏，而且這地所有的居民因你們的緣故都膽戰心驚。因為我們聽見你們出埃及的時候、永恆主怎樣使蘆葦海的水從你們面前乾了，你們又怎樣處置約但河東邊亞摩利人的兩個王、西宏和噩，就是你們所盡行毁滅歸神的。我們一聽見，都膽戰心驚；因你們的緣故、再沒有人勇氣能立得住的了；因為是永恆主你們的上帝、他在上天下地在做上帝。

我要把列國人從你面前趕出去，擴張你的境界；你一年三次上去朝見永恆主你的上帝的時候，必沒有人貪圖你的地。』

在你們面前必沒有一個人能站立得住；永恆主你們的上帝必使你們所要踏的地的居民震懾你們、懼怕你們，照他所告訴過你們的。

那時以東的族系長驚惶，摩押的權貴被戰兢抓住，迦南的居民都震撼搖動：恐怖震懾襲擊了他們。永恆主啊，因你膀臂之大能力，他們竟如石頭寂然不動，等你的人民過去，等你所獲得的人民過去。

於是在營中、在田野間、在眾民中、人都震顫發抖；駐防兵和遊擊兵呢、也都震顫發抖；地震動，顫抖之勢非常之大。

將一對牛切成塊子，由使者經手送遍以色列四境，說：『凡不出來跟從掃羅和撒母耳的，也必這樣待他的牛。』於是眾民都起了懼怕永恆主的心，大家就都出來、如同一人。

他們又擊破了基拉耳四圍的所有的城；因為各城的人都起了懼怕永恆主的心。猶大人又將所有的城掠劫一空，因為各城有可掠劫的財物很多。

雅各對西緬和利未說：『你們把我搞壞了，使我在這地的居民中，在迦南人和比利洗人中間，有了臭名。我人數既然稀少，他們是會聚集來攻打我、擊殺我的，那我和我的家就被消滅了。』
