Don’t fail to discipline your children. The rod of punishment won’t kill them.Physical discipline may well save them from death.

A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but physical discipline will drive it far away.

“ But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren.

My children, listen when your father corrects you. Pay attention and learn good judgment,for I am giving you good guidance. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.

O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do.Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

“ In the future your children will ask you,‘ What is the meaning of these laws, decrees, and regulations that the Lord our God has commanded us to obey?’“ Then you must tell them,‘ We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand.The Lord did miraculous signs and wonders before our eyes, dealing terrifying blows against Egypt and Pharaoh and all his people.He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors.And the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear him so he can continue to bless us and preserve our lives, as he has done to this day.

The Lord has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work.”

Only the living can praise you as I do today. Each generation tells of your faithfulness to the next.

But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

Then David continued,“ Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly.

Then your children will ask,‘ What does this ceremony mean?’And you will reply,‘ It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struck the Egyptians, he spared our families.’” When Moses had finished speaking, all the people bowed down to the ground and worshiped.

We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you,‘ What do these stones mean?’Then you can tell them,‘ They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.”

He is the one who will build a Temple to honor my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will secure the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’“ Now, my son, may the Lord be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the Lord your God.And may the Lord give you wisdom and understanding, that you may obey the Law of the Lord your God as you rule over Israel.For you will be successful if you carefully obey the decrees and regulations that the Lord gave to Israel through Moses. Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or lose heart!

“ And in the future, your children will ask you,‘ What does all this mean?’ Then you will tell them,‘ With the power of his mighty hand, the Lord brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery.Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, so the Lord killed all the firstborn males throughout the land of Egypt, both people and animals. That is why I now sacrifice all the firstborn males to the Lord— except that the firstborn sons are always bought back.’

Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations.”

Then Joshua said to the Israelites,“ In the future your children will ask,‘ What do these stones mean?’Then you can tell them,‘ This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea when he dried it up until we had all crossed over.He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever.”

So at last Jonathan realized that his father was really determined to kill David.Jonathan left the table in fierce anger and refused to eat on that second day of the festival, for he was crushed by his father’s shameful behavior toward David.
