I have thought deeply about all that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to hurt each other.

此皆我所見者、專心詳察日下所作諸事、見操權者、有時使人受害、

我詳觀天下事、見有陷害同儔者、

凡此我嘗見之、我專心詳觀日下所作之事、有時人轄人、致人受害、有時人轄人致人受害或作有時人轄人致自受害

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

I understood all these things. I used my mind to study everything that’s done on earth. A man sometimes makes life hard for others. But he ends up hurting himself.

All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.

All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one person has authority over another to his harm.

All this I have seen, and have applied my mind to every deed that has been done under the sun at a time when one person has exercised authority over another person to his detriment.

All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.

While applying my mind to everything that happens in this world, I have seen all this: Sometimes one person dominates other people to their harm.

Don’t be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.

There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.

I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun.This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

When word reached the king of Egypt that the Israelites had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds.“ What have we done, letting all those Israelite slaves get away?” they asked.So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops.He took with him 600 of Egypt’s best chariots, along with the rest of the chariots of Egypt, each with its commander.The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, so he chased after the people of Israel, who had left with fists raised in defiance.The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army— all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel as they were camped beside the shore near Pi hahiroth, across from Baal zephon.

I observed everything going on under the sun, and really, it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

“ But King Sihon of Heshbon refused to allow us to pass through, because the Lord your God made Sihon stubborn and defiant so he could help you defeat him, as he has now done.

“ You have indeed defeated Edom, and you are proud of it. But be content with your victory and stay at home! Why stir up trouble that will only bring disaster on you and the people of Judah?”But Amaziah refused to listen, so King Jehoash of Israel mobilized his army against King Amaziah of Judah. The two armies drew up their battle lines at Beth shemesh in Judah.Judah was routed by the army of Israel, and its army scattered and fled for home.

Then the waters returned and covered all the chariots and charioteers— the entire army of Pharaoh. Of all the Egyptians who had chased the Israelites into the sea, not a single one survived.

They made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons. Then they gouged out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him in bronze chains, and led him away to Babylon.

I have seen the burden God has placed on us all.

I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.
