For the fate of the children of Adam and the fate of animals is the same. As one dies, so dies the other; they all have the same breath. People have no advantage over animals since everything is futile.

人所遇者、獸亦遇之、人與獸所遇惟一、此之死猶彼之死、同一氣之呼吸、人無所愈於獸、悉屬虛空、

世人禽獸、同一氣之呼吸、其必死無以異也、則人不遠於禽獸、而萬事悉歸諸虛矣。

人命獸命俱同、原文作人之所遇無異獸之所遇人與獸所遇惟一死亦彼此無異、皆恃呼吸之氣、如此、人無所勝於獸、皆屬於虛、

Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.

Surely what happens to animals happens to people too. Death waits for people and animals alike. People die, just as animals do. All of them have the same breath. People don’t have any advantage over animals. Nothing has any meaning.

For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity.

For people and animals share the same fate— both breathe and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless!

In fact, you have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor. SelahYes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.

Remember how short my life is. Have you created everyone for nothing?What courageous person can live and never see death? Who can save himself from the power of Sheol? Selah

But a person dies and fades away; he breathes his last— where is he?As water disappears from a lake and a river becomes parched and dry,so people lie down never to rise again. They will not wake up until the heavens are no more; they will not stir from their sleep.

When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust.

So I began to give myself over to despair concerning all my work that I had labored at under the sun.When there is a person whose work was done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a person who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great wrong.For what does a person get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun?For all his days are filled with grief, and his occupation is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is futile.

We will certainly die and be like water poured out on the ground, which can’t be recovered. But God would not take away a life; he would devise plans so that the one banished from him does not remain banished.

A stupid person does not know, a fool does not understand this:though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be eternally destroyed.

The wise person has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both.
