I said to myself,“ This happens so that God may test the children of Adam and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”

我又自思曰、世事如是乃緣人之故、蓋天主欲以試人、使人知人與獸無異、

I also said to myself,“ As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.

I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but beasts.

I also thought about the human condition— how God proves to people that they are like animals.

I said to myself regarding the sons of mankind,“ God is testing them in order for them to see that they are as animals, they to themselves.”

I said in my heart,“ Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.”

I said in my heart, It is because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, and that they may see that they themselves are but as beasts.

I said to myself,“ This happens concerning people, so that God may test them and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”

I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

I also thought to myself,“ It is for the sake of people, so God can clearly show them that they are like animals.

I said in my heart,“ As for the sons of men, God tests them, so that they may see that they themselves are like animals.

I was stupid and didn’t understand; I was an unthinking animal toward you.

And just as it is appointed for people to die once— and after this, judgment—

And he said to the man,“ Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you,‘ Do not eat from it’: The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life.It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”

And what if he did this to make known the riches of his glory on objects of mercy that he prepared beforehand for glory—

he will go to the generation of his ancestors; they will never see the light.Mankind, with his assets but without understanding, is like the animals that perish.

You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning—in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up.For we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath.You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.For all our days ebb away under your wrath; we end our years like a sigh.Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.Who understands the power of your anger? Your wrath matches the fear that is due you.Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.

Against you— you alone— I have sinned and done this evil in your sight. So you are right when you pass sentence; you are blameless when you judge.

But these people, like irrational animals— creatures of instinct born to be caught and destroyed— slander what they do not understand, and in their destruction they too will be destroyed.

Anyone born of woman is short of days and full of trouble.He blossoms like a flower, then withers; he flees like a shadow and does not last.Do you really take notice of one like this? Will you bring me into judgment against you?Who can produce something pure from what is impure? No one!

Indeed, you put them in slippery places; you make them fall into ruin.How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors.

how much less one who is revolting and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water?

Like sheep they are headed for Sheol; Death will shepherd them. The upright will rule over them in the morning, and their form will waste away in Sheol, far from their lofty abode.

Would you really challenge my justice? Would you declare me guilty to justify yourself?

Absolutely not! Let God be true, even though everyone is a liar, as it is written: That you may be justified in your words and triumph when you judge.

But despite his assets, mankind will not last; he is like the animals that perish.

For All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
