And the answer will be:“ It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.

Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:

我曾对我的子民发怒，使我的产业被亵渎，我把他们交在你的手里，你却对他们毫无怜悯。你竟把你的轭，重重压在老年人的身上。

看哪！耶和华使大地空虚，变为荒凉；他必翻转地面，使地上的居民四散。人民和祭司，仆人和主人，婢女和主母，购买的和贩卖的，借给人和向人借的，放债的和借债的，全都一样被分散。大地必完全倒空，被劫掠净尽，这话是耶和华说的。大地悲哀衰残，世界零落衰残，地上居高位的人也衰败了。大地被其上的居民玷污，因为他们犯了律法，违了律例，背了永远的约。因此，大地被咒诅吞灭，地上的居民要承担惩罚。因此，地上的居民被焚烧，剩下的人很少。

这新约不像从前我拉他们祖先的手，领他们出埃及地的日子，与他们所立的约；我虽然是他们的丈夫，他们却违背了我的约。”这是耶和华的宣告。

所有遇见他们的都吞吃他们；他们的敌人说：‘我们没有罪，因为他们得罪了耶和华，那真正的居所；耶和华是他们列祖的盼望。’

这新约不像从前我拉他们祖先的手，领他们出埃及的日子与他们所立的约。因为他们没有遵守我的约，我就不理会他们。这是主说的。

护卫长把耶利米提出来，对他说：“耶和华你的神曾说要降这灾祸在这地方；现在耶和华使灾祸临到，照他所说的行了；因为你们得罪了耶和华，没有听从他的话，所以这事才临到你们。

必有人说：‘是因为他们离弃了耶和华他们神的约，并且敬拜事奉别神。’”

他说：“我为耶和华万军的神大发热心，因为以色列人背弃了你的约，拆毁了你的祭坛，用刀杀死了你的众先知，只剩下我一个人，他们还在寻索，要取去我的性命。”耶和华说：“你出来站在山上，在我耶和华面前。”那时，耶和华从那里经过。在耶和华面前有强烈的大风，山崩石碎，但耶和华不在风中；风过以后有地震，但耶和华也不在地震中；地震过后有火，耶和华也不在火中；火后有低微柔和的声音。以利亚听见了，就用自己的外衣蒙着脸，走出来，站在洞口。忽然有声音向他说：“以利亚啊，你在这里干什么？”以利亚说：“我为耶和华万军的神大发热心，因为以色列人背弃了你的约，拆毁了你的祭坛，用刀杀了你的众先知，只剩下我一个人，他们还在寻索，要取去我的性命。”
