When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee;[ yet] if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou dost afflict them;

“ When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them,

“ Suppose your people have sinned against you. And because of that, the sky is closed up and there isn’t any rain. But your people pray toward this place. They praise you by admitting they’ve sinned. And they turn away from their sin because you have made them suffer.

“ When heaven is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and acknowledge your name and turn from their sin, when you afflict them,

“ If the skies are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and if they pray toward this Temple and acknowledge your name and turn from their sins because you have punished them,

“ The time will come when the skies are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you, and turn away from their sin because you punish them,

“ When the sky is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when you afflict them;

And[ then] the LORD’S wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and[ lest] ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.

And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

And thy heaven that[ is] over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee[ shall be] iron.

I will go[ and] return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

Again, when the wicked[ man] turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn[ yourselves] from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn[ yourselves], and live ye.

And Elijah the Tishbite,[ who was] of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab,[ As] the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that[ is] before Jordan.And it shall be,[ that] thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that[ is] before Jordan.And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which[ belongeth] to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman[ was] there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.And as she was going to fetch[ it], he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.And she said,[ As] the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I[ am] gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go[ and] do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring[ it] unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day[ that] the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat[ many] days.[ And] the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.And it came to pass after these things,[ that] the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he[ was] God.

Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders[ and] all the inhabitants of the land[ into] the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD[ is] at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.Is not the meat cut off before our eyes,[ yea], joy and gladness from the house of our God?The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:

Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning,[ and] your tithes after three years:And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim[ and] publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.And also I have withholden the rain from you, when[ there were] yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.So two[ or] three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured[ them]: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh[ them] shall have mercy.

These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits,[ and] found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook[ it], because there was no grass.And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because[ there was] no grass.O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou[ it] for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man[ that] turneth aside to tarry for a night?Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man[ that] cannot save? yet thou, O LORD,[ art] in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.

Thus saith the LORD, Where[ is] the bill of your mother’s divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors[ is it] to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.Wherefore, when I came,[ was there] no man? when I called,[ was there] none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because[ there is] no water, and dieth for thirst.

Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where[ is] their God?
