使我無愛德、而徒能操萬國之音、作天神之語、則猶鳴鑼擊鈸而已矣。

我若能言諸國諸天使之言而無愛、則猶鳴金響鈸、

我如能言諸國方言、與天使之言、而無仁、則猶鳴金敲鈸、

我雖能言世人及天使之言、若無愛、則如鳴鉦響鈸、

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

Suppose I speak in the languages of human beings or of angels. If I don’t have love, I am only a loud gong or a noisy cymbal.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

夫所當勸告於人者、一言以蔽之、亦曰以光明之心地、純潔之天良無妄之信德、存養愛德而已矣。

彼此之間、恆懷熱烈之愛德、尤為切要。惟愛德能掩蓋群罪也。

若夫聖神之果、則為仁愛、神樂、安怡、忍耐、慈祥、良善、忠信、

使我無愛德、而具先知之靈賦、心通一切玄妙、一切知識、甚至有移山之信、則亦浮華無實耳。使我無愛德、雖罄輸所有、以濟貧寒、甚至捨身以投諸火、亦何益之有。

預言有時而息、方言有時而廢、智識有時而窮；而愛德則永久不匱也。

在基督道中、受割與否、無關宏旨、亦惟興於仁而立於信而已矣。

至論祭肉如何、吾人皆曰斯易知耳。然知能長傲、惟愛德則能立己立人也。

譬如吾來兄弟處、儘操方言、則於爾何益；必也授爾以啟示、傳爾以知識、覺爾以預言、警爾以教訓、斯有益矣。今夫簫與琴者、無生之物也；其聲律猶須釐然而不相混、不然將無以成音調。再如吹角、若發音含混不明、其誰復鼓舞精神、從事戰鬥耶？

蓋斯輩大言不慚、提倡邪淫；凡初脫惡習者、鮮不受惑；

王將答曰：「吾實語爾爾未施之於至微者、即未施之於吾身耳。」

豈能皆為宗徒、皆為先知、皆為教師、皆施聖蹟、皆行醫道、皆操方言、皆作繙譯者哉？

或感聖神而受妙諦、或感同一聖神而受智辯、

倘爾以食物細故、而貽兄弟以無謂之疑慮、則爾不復以仁愛之道而行矣。夫基督不惜為彼而死、爾乃以爾之食物致彼於死、毋乃不可乎。

當時魂之附體與否、吾不之知也；知之惟天主。

耳曰：『吾既非目、故不屬身、』其果不屬身耶？
