“ Aaron will be gathered to his ancestors, for he will not enter into the land I have given to the Israelites because both of you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

They were not yet filled up, their food was still in their mouths,when the anger of God flared up against them. He killed some of the strongest of them; he brought the young men of Israel to their knees.

For David, after he had served God’s purpose in his own generation, died, was buried with his ancestors, and experienced decay,

O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury!For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down.My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin.For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins.I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning.For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick.I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.

if they break my rules and do not keep my commandments,I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club, their sin by inflicting them with bruises.But I will not remove my loyal love from him, nor be unfaithful to my promise.I will not break my covenant or go back on what I promised.

When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live.”So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole, so that if a snake had bitten someone, when he looked at the bronze snake he lived.

Listen, I will tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed–

and he cried out to the prophet from Judah,“ This is what the LORD says,‘ You have rebelled against the LORD and have not obeyed the command the LORD your God gave you.You went back and ate and drank in this place, even though he said to you,“ Do not eat or drink there.” Therefore your corpse will not be buried in your ancestral tomb.’”When the prophet from Judah finished his meal, the old prophet saddled his visitor’s donkey for him.As the prophet from Judah was traveling, a lion attacked him on the road and killed him. His corpse was lying on the road, and the donkey and the lion just stood there beside it.

“ I have chosen you alone from all the clans of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all your sins.”

Nonetheless, because you have treated the LORD with such contempt in this matter, the son who has been born to you will certainly die.”Then Nathan went to his home. The LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and the child became very ill.Then David prayed to God for the child and fasted. He would even go and spend the night lying on the ground.The elders of his house stood over him and tried to lift him from the ground, but he was unwilling, and refused to eat food with them.On the seventh day the child died. But the servants of David were afraid to inform him that the child had died, for they said,“ While the child was still alive he would not listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He will do himself harm!”

And have you forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons?“ My son, do not scorn the Lord’s discipline or give up when he corrects you.“ For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.”Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons have shared in, then you are illegitimate and are not sons.Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life?For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness.Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it.
