The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel( he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright,

Reuben was the oldest son of Israel. But he slept with his father’s concubine. By doing that, he made his father’s bed“ unclean.” That’s why his rights as the oldest son were given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel. So Reuben isn’t listed in the family history as the one who had the rights of the oldest son.

以色列祝福約瑟說：「願我祖父亞伯拉罕和我父以撒所跟隨的神，就是牧養我一生直到今日的神，也是救贖我脫離一切禍患的那一位，祝福這兩個孩子！願我的名，我祖父亞伯拉罕和我父以撒的名，藉著他們得以流傳；願他們在地上生養眾多。」約瑟見父親把右手按在以法蓮的頭上，就覺得不對，於是抓著父親的手，要從以法蓮的頭上移到瑪拿西的頭上。約瑟對他父親說：「我的父親哪，這樣不對！這一個才是長子，你要把右手放在他的頭上。」他父親卻拒絕他，說：「我知道，我兒，我知道！他也要成為一族，也必昌大；只是他的弟弟將來比他還要昌大，他弟弟的後裔必成為多國。」以色列當天就祝福他們，說：「以色列人要用你們的名說祝福的話：『願神使你像以法蓮和瑪拿西一樣。』」這樣他把以法蓮立在瑪拿西之先。以色列對約瑟說：「看哪，我就要死了！但神必與你們同在，把你們帶回到你們祖先之地。我還要使你比眾兄弟多得一塊山地，就是我曾經用刀用弓從亞摩利人手中奪過來的。」

魯本哪，你是我的長子；你是我的力量，我強壯時頭生的；尊榮出眾、權力出眾；你卻放縱如水，必不再出眾；因為你上了你父親的床，把床玷汙了。他居然上了我的床鋪！

耶和華對她說：「兩國在你的腹中，兩族將從你裡面分出來；一族要比另一族強，將來大的要服事小的。」

來到埃及的以色列人，就是雅各和他的子孫——他們的名字如下：雅各的長子魯本，

愛子是那不可見之神的形像，是一切被造之物的長子，

他們到的時候，撒母耳看見以利押，就想：「在耶和華面前的這個人，一定是他的受膏者。」但耶和華對撒母耳說：「不要看他的容貌和他的高大身材，其實我已經厭棄了他。因為我所看的不像人所看的；人是看眼所見的，耶和華是看內心。」耶西叫來亞比拿達，讓他從撒母耳面前經過，撒母耳說：「耶和華也沒有揀選這人。」耶西讓沙瑪經過，撒母耳說：「耶和華也沒有揀選這人。」耶西讓他的七個兒子都從撒母耳面前經過，撒母耳對耶西說：「耶和華沒有揀選這些人。」撒母耳問耶西：「孩子們全來了嗎？」耶西回答：「還剩下最小的那個，看哪，他正在放羊。」撒母耳對耶西說：「派人去把他帶來，在他來到之前，我們不會入席。」

到處都有消息說你們中間有淫亂，並且這樣的淫亂連外邦人中也沒有——竟然有人與他的繼母同居。
