I Am the True Vine
1“I am the 15:1 [Jer. 2:21] true vine, and my Father is 15:1 [1 Cor. 3:9]the vinedresser.
215:2 ver. 6; Matt. 3:10; 7:19; [Rom. 11:17; 2 Pet. 1:8] Every branch in me that does not bear fruit 15:2 [Matt. 15:13; Rom. 11:22] he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, 15:2 [Matt. 13:12]that it may bear more fruit.
3Already 15:3 ch. 13:10you are clean 15:3 ch. 17:17; [ver. 7; Eph. 5:26]because of the word that I have spoken to you.
415:4 ver. 5-7; 1 John 2:6; [Phil. 1:11; Col. 1:23]; See ch. 6:56Abide 15:4 See ch. 3:15in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
5I am the vine; 15:5 Rom. 6:5you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that 15:5 ver. 16; Col. 1:6, 10bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
6If anyone does not abide in me, 15:6 See ver. 2he is thrown away like a branch and withers; 15:6 Matt. 13:40-42; [Ezek. 15:4]and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
7If 15:7 See ch. 8:31you abide in me, and my words abide in you, 15:7 See ch. 14:13ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
815:8 Isa. 61:3; Matt. 5:16; 2 Cor. 9:13; Phil. 1:11By this my Father is glorified, that you 15:8 ver. 5bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
915:9 See ch. 5:20As the Father has loved me, 15:9 See ch. 13:34so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
1015:10 [ch. 14:15, 23] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as 15:10 ch. 8:55; 17:4; Phil. 2:8I have kept 15:10 See ch. 10:18my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
11These things I have spoken to you, 15:11 [2 Cor. 2:3] that my joy may be in you, and that 15:11 ch. 3:29; 16:24; 17:13; 1 John 1:4; 2 John 12your joy may be full.
1215:12 See ch. 13:34“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
1315:13 Rom. 5:7, 8; Eph. 5:2Greater love has no one than this, 15:13 See ch. 10:11that someone lay down his life for his friends.
14You are 15:14 Luke 12:4my friends 15:14 [ver. 10; Matt. 12:50]if you do what I command you.
1515:15 [ver. 20] No longer do I call you servants,15:15 Or bondservants, or slaves (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface); likewise for servant later in this verse and in verse 20for the servant 15:15 [ch. 13:7, 12] does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for 15:15 ch. 3:32; 8:26, 40; [ch. 16:13] all that I have heard from my Father 15:15 ch. 17:26; [Gen. 18:17; 1 Cor. 2:16; 13:9, 10]I have made known to you.
16You did not choose me, but 15:16 See ch. 13:18I chose you and appointed you that you should go and 15:16 [2 John 8] bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that 15:16 [ver. 7]; See ch. 14:13whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
17These things I command you, 15:17 ver. 12so that you will love one another.
The Hatred of the World
1815:18 ch. 7:7; 1 John 3:13; [ver. 23, 24]“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
1915:19 [1 John 4:5] If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because 15:19 ch. 17:14, 16; [Luke 6:26; Gal. 1:4; James 4:4]you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
20Remember the word that I said to you: 15:20 ch. 13:16; Matt. 10:24; [ver. 15] ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, 15:20 ch. 16:33; 1 Cor. 4:12; 2 Cor. 4:9; 1 Thess. 2:15; 2 Tim. 3:12they will also persecute you. 15:20 [Ezek. 3:7]; See ch. 8:51If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
21But 15:21 ch. 16:3all these things they will do to you 15:21 Matt. 10:22; 24:9; Rev. 2:3; [Acts 5:41; 1 Pet. 4:14, 16] on account of my name, 15:21 See Acts 3:17because they do not know him who sent me.
22If I had not come and spoken to them, 15:22 [Matt. 11:22, 24; Luke 12:47, 48]; See ch. 9:41they would not have been guilty of sin,15:22 Greek they would not have sin; also verse 24but now they have no excuse for their sin.
2315:23 See ch. 5:23Whoever hates me hates my Father also.
2415:24 ch. 3:2; 7:31; 9:32; Matt. 9:33; [ch. 10:32, 37] If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, 15:24 [See ver. 22above] they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have 15:24 See ch. 14:9seen and hated both me and my Father.
25But 15:25 See ch. 10:34; 12:38the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: 15:25 Cited from Ps. 35:19or 69:4‘They hated me without a cause.’
26“But 15:26 See ch. 14:16, 17, 26when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, 15:26 1 Cor. 12:3; 1 John 5:7he will bear witness about me.
27And 15:27 ch. 19:35; 21:24; 1 John 1:2; 4:14; [3 John 12]; See Luke 24:48you also will bear witness, 15:27 See Acts 4:20because you have been with me 15:27 [Luke 1:2; Acts 1:21, 22; 1 John 2:7]from the beginning.
