Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1Now 13:1 ch. 12:1before 13:1 See ch. 6:4the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that 13:1 See ch. 12:23his hour had come 13:1 ver. 3; ch. 16:28to depart out of this world to the Father, 13:1 ver. 34having loved 13:1 ch. 1:11; 17:6, 9-11his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2During supper, when 13:2 ver. 11, 27; [Acts 5:3]; See ch. 6:70, 71the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
3Jesus, knowing 13:3 See ch. 17:2; Matt. 11:27; Rev. 2:27that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that 13:3 ch. 8:42; 16:28he had come from God and 13:3 See ch. 14:12was going back to God,
4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, 13:4 [ch. 21:7; Luke 22:27]tied it around his waist.
5Then he 13:5 [2 Kgs. 3:11]poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”
713:7 [ver. 36] Jesus answered him, “What I am doing 13:7 ver. 12; [ch. 12:16; 15:15]you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”
813:8 [Matt. 16:22] Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, 13:8 [1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5; Heb. 10:22]“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”
10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, 13:10 See Gen. 18:4except for his feet,13:10 Some manuscripts omit except for his feetbut is completely clean. And 13:10 ch. 15:3you13:10 The Greek words for you in this verse are pluralare clean, 13:10 ver. 18but not every one of you.”
1113:11 ver. 2; ch. 6:64; See ch. 2:24, 25For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12When he had washed their feet and 13:12 ver. 4put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, 13:12 ver. 7“Do you understand what I have done to you?
1313:13 Luke 6:46You call me 13:13 Matt. 23:8, 10; 1 Cor. 8:6; 12:3; Phil. 2:11Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.
14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, 13:14 1 Tim. 5:10; [1 Pet. 5:5]you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15For I have given you an example, 13:15 See Matt. 11:29that you also should do just as I have done to you.
16Truly, truly, I say to you, 13:16 ch. 15:20; Matt. 10:24a servant13:16 Or bondservant, or slave (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface)is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17If you know these things, 13:17 See Luke 11:28; James 1:22blessed are you if you do them.
1813:18 ver. 10, 11I am not speaking of all of you; I know 13:18 ch. 6:70; 15:16, 19; [Mark 3:13; Luke 6:13; Acts 1:2] whom I have chosen. But 13:18 [ch. 17:12]; See Matt. 1:22the Scripture will be fulfilled,13:18 Greek But in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled13:18 Cited from Ps. 41:9; [ver. 26; Matt. 26:23]‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
1913:19 ch. 14:29; 16:4I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he.
20Truly, truly, I say to you, 13:20 See Matt. 10:40whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
One of You Will Betray Me
21After saying these things, 13:21 ch. 12:27Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, 13:21 Matt. 26:21; Mark 14:18; Luke 22:21“Truly, truly, I say to you, 13:21 Acts 1:17one of you will betray me.”
2213:22 Luke 22:23The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.
2313:23 ch. 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table 13:23 [Luke 16:22 (Gk.)]at Jesus’ side,13:23 Greek in the bosom of Jesus
24so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus13:24 Greek lacks Jesus of whom he was speaking.
2513:25 Mark 4:36So that disciple, 13:25 ch. 21:20 (Gk.)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?”
26Jesus answered, 13:26 Matt. 26:23; Mark 14:20“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread 13:26 Ruth 2:14when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, 13:26 [Matt. 26:25] he gave it to Judas, 13:26 ch. 6:71the son of Simon Iscariot.
27Then after he had taken the morsel, 13:27 Luke 22:3; [ver. 2; 1 Cor. 11:27] Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, 13:27 [Luke 12:50]“What you are going to do, do quickly.”
28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.
29Some thought that, 13:29 ch. 12:6because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need 13:29 ver. 1for the feast,” or that he should 13:29 ch. 12:5give something to the poor.
30So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. 13:30 [1 Sam. 28:8]And it was night.
A New Commandment
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, 13:31 See ch. 7:39“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and 13:31 ch. 14:13; 15:8; 17:1, 4; 1 Pet. 4:11God is glorified in him.
32If God is glorified in him, 13:32 ch. 17:1, 5God will also glorify him in himself, and 13:32 See ch. 12:23glorify him at once.
33Little children, 13:33 See ch. 7:33yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just 13:33 ch. 7:34; 8:21as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
3413:34 1 John 2:7, 8; 3:11; 2 John 5A new commandment 13:34 ch. 15:12, 17; 1 John 3:23; 4:21I give to you, 13:34 Lev. 19:18; Rom. 13:8; Col. 3:14; 1 Thess. 4:9; 1 Tim. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:22that you love one another: 13:34 ch. 15:12; Eph. 5:2; 1 John 4:10, 11just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
3513:35 [1 John 3:14; 4:20]By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” 13:36 [ver. 7] Jesus answered him, “Where I am going 13:36 [ch. 7:34; 14:2] you cannot follow me now, 13:36 ch. 21:18, 19; 2 Pet. 1:14but you will follow afterward.”
3713:37 Matt. 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; Luke 22:33, 34Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, 13:38 ch. 18:27the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
