Restoration from Captivity
1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord.
2“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you,30:2 Ex 17:14; 34:1,27; Nm 5:23; Dt 17:18; 27:3; 31:19; Is 30:8; Jr 36:2,28; Ezk 43:11; Hs 8:12; Hab 2:2; 1Co 14:37; Rv 1:11; 10:4; 14:13; 19:9; 21:5
3for look, the days are coming” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “when I will restore the fortunes30:3 Or will end the captivity of my people Israel and Judah,”30:3 Jr 33:7,11; Ezk 37:15–23; 39:25; Jl 3:1; Am 9:14 says the Lord. “I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it.”
We have heard a cry of terror,
of dread — there is no peace.
6Ask and see
whether a male can give birth.
Why then do I see every man
with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor
and every face turned pale?30:6 Ps 48:6; Is 13:8; 21:3; 42:14; Jr 4:31; 6:24; 13:21; 22:23; 50:43; Mc 4:9–10; 1Th 5:3
There will be no other like it!30:7 Dn 12:1
It will be a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.
8On that day —
this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies —
and tear off your chains,30:8 Jr 27:2
and strangers will never again enslave him.30:8 Ezk 34:27
9They will serve the Lord their God
and David their king,
do not be afraid —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you out of a distant place,
your descendants, from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
11For I will be with you —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have scattered you;
however, I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you justly,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.30:10–11 Ex 34:7; Jr 46:27–28
Healing Zion’s Wounds
12For this is what the Lord says:
Your injury is incurable;
There is no remedy for your sores,
and no healing for you.30:13 Or No one pleads that your sores should be healed. There is no remedy for you.
they no longer look for you,
for I have struck you as an enemy would,
because of your enormous guilt
and your innumerable sins.
15Why do you cry out about your injury?
Your pain has no cure!
I have done these things to you
because of your enormous guilt
and all your adversaries — all of them —
will go off into exile.
Those who plunder you will be plundered,
and will heal you of your wounds —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
for they call you Outcast,
Zion whom no one cares about.
Restoration of the Land
18This is what the Lord says:
I will certainly restore the fortunes30:18 Or certainly end the captivity of Jacob’s tents30:18 Jr 30:3
Every city will be rebuilt on its mound;
every citadel will stand on its proper site.
19Thanksgiving will come out of them,
a sound of rejoicing.
I will multiply them, and they will not decrease;30:19 Jr 29:6
I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant.
20His children will be as in past days;
his congregation will be established in my presence.
I will punish all his oppressors.30:20 Jdg 10:12; Is 19:20–25
21Jacob’s leader will be one of them;
his ruler will issue from him.
I will invite him to me, and he will approach me,30:21 Nm 16:5
for who would otherwise risk his life to approach me?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
22You will be my people,
The Wrath of God
Wrath has gone out,
a churning storm.
It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.
24The Lord’s burning anger will not turn back
until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart.
In time to come you will understand it.30:23–24 Jr 23:19–20
