The Message - We call Abraham “father” not because he got God’s attention by living like a saint, but because God made something out of Abraham when he was a nobody. Isn’t that what we’ve always read in Scripture, God saying to Abraham, “I set you up as father of many peoples”? Abraham was first named “father” and then became a father because he dared to trust God to do what only God could do: raise the dead to life, with a word make something out of nothing. When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn’t do but on what God said he would do. And so he was made father of a multitude of peoples. God himself said to him, “You’re going to have a big family, Abraham!”

Genesis 25:1 - Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah,
Genesis 25:2 - and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Genesis 25:3 - Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s sons were the Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
Genesis 25:4 - And Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were sons of Keturah.
Genesis 25:5 - Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac.
Genesis 25:6 - But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines, and while he was still alive he sent them eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the East.
Genesis 25:7 - This is the length of Abraham’s life: 175 years.
Genesis 25:8 - He took his last breath and died at a good old age, old and contented, and he was gathered to his people.

Genesis 25:23 - And the Lord said to her: Two nations are in your womb; two peoples will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.
Genesis 25:24 - When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.
Genesis 25:25 - The first one came out red-looking, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau.
Genesis 25:26 - After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
