Mark14

The Plot to Kill Jesus
114:1 For ver. 1, 2, see Matt. 26:2-5; Luke 22:1, 2It was now two days before 14:1 See John 6:4the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes 14:1 John 11:53; See Matt. 21:46were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,
2for they said, “Not during the feast, 14:2 Matt. 27:24lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
314:3 For ver. 3-9, see Matt. 26:6-13; John 12:1-8; [Luke 7:37-39] And while he was at 14:3 Matt. 21:17; John 11:18Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,14:3 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13 as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?
5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii14:5 A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer and 14:5 [John 13:29] given to the poor.” And they 14:5 John 11:33, 38 (Gk.)scolded her.
6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7For 14:7 Deut. 15:11you always have the poor with you, and whenever 14:7 [2 Cor. 9:7] you want, you can do good for them. But 14:7 ch. 2:20; See John 7:33you will not always have me.
814:8 [ch. 12:43; Luke 21:3; 2 Cor. 8:12] She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand 14:8 John 19:40for burial.
9And truly, I say to you, wherever 14:9 [Matt. 24:14] the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told 14:9 Acts 10:4in memory of her.”
Judas to Betray Jesus
1014:10 For ver. 10, 11, see Matt. 26:14-16; Luke 22:3-6; [John 13:2, 27, 30] Then 14:10 ch. 3:19; Matt. 27:3; Acts 1:16; [John 6:71; 12:4]Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, 14:10 ch. 3:19; Matt. 27:3; Acts 1:16; [John 6:71; 12:4]went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.
11And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to 14:11 See Matt. 20:18, 19betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
1214:12 For ver. 12-16, see Matt. 26:17-19; Luke 22:7-13And on 14:12 Ex. 12:18the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they 14:12 1 Cor. 5:7sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
13And he sent 14:13 [ch. 11:1]two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,
14and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 14:14 See John 11:28‘The Teacher says, Where is 14:14 Luke 2:7 (Gk.)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
15And he will show you 14:15 [Acts 1:13]a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”
16And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
1714:17 For ver. 17-21, see Matt. 26:20-24; [Luke 22:14, 21-23; John 13:21-26]And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.
18And as they were reclining at table and eating, 14:18 [John 6:70, 71] Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, 14:18 [Ps. 41:9; John 13:18]one who is eating with me.”
19They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”
20He said to them, “It is 14:20 ver. 10one of the twelve, 14:20 [See ver. 18above]one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.
21For the Son of Man goes 14:21 ver. 49; ch. 9:12; Luke 18:31; 24:25, 27, 46; Acts 17:2, 3; 26:22, 23; 1 Cor. 15:3; 1 Pet. 1:10, 11as it is written of him, but 14:21 Matt. 18:7woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! 14:21 [See John 17:12]It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
2214:22 For ver. 22-25, see Matt. 26:26-29; Luke 22:18-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25And as they were eating, he took bread, and after 14:22 See Matt. 14:19blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; 14:22 1 Cor. 10:16; [John 6:53]this is my body.”
23And he took a cup, and when he had 14:23 See Matt. 15:36given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.
24And he said to them, 14:24 [See ver. 22above] “This is my 14:24 Ex. 24:8; [Zech. 9:11; Heb. 13:20] blood of the14:24 Some manuscripts insert newcovenant, which is poured out for 14:24 See Matt. 20:28many.
25Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
2614:26 For ver. 26-31, see Matt. 26:30-35And when they had sung a hymn, 14:26 Luke 22:39; John 18:1they went out to 14:26 See Matt. 21:1the Mount of Olives.
27And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will 14:27 Cited from Zech. 13:7; [John 16:32]strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
28But after I am raised up, 14:28 ch. 16:7; Matt. 28:7, 10, 16I will go before you to Galilee.”
2914:29 [Luke 22:31, 33]Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”
30And 14:30 Luke 22:34; John 13:38Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before 14:30 ver. 68, 72the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
31But 14:31 John 13:37he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
3214:32 For ver. 32-42, see Matt. 26:36-46; Luke 22:40-46And they went 14:32 [See ver. 26above]to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33And he took with him 14:33 ch. 5:37; 9:2Peter and James and John, and began 14:33 [Matt. 17:23]to be greatly distressed and troubled.
34And he said to them, 14:34 [Ps. 42:5, 6; John 12:27] “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and 14:34 See Matt. 24:42watch.”14:34 Or keep awake; also verses 37, 38
35And going a little farther, he fell on the ground 14:35 Heb. 5:7and prayed that, if it were possible, 14:35 ver. 41; John 12:23, 27; 13:1; 17:1; [Luke 22:53; John 16:4]the hour might pass from him.
36And he said, 14:36 Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6“Abba, Father, 14:36 See Matt. 19:26all things are possible for you. Remove 14:36 See ch. 10:38this cup from me. 14:36 John 5:30; 6:38; Phil. 2:8Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
37And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?
3814:38 [See ver. 34above] Watch and 14:38 1 Pet. 4:7pray that you may not 14:38 Matt. 6:13enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39And again he went away and prayed, 14:39 ver. 36saying the same words.
40And again he came and found them sleeping, for 14:40 Luke 9:32their eyes were very heavy, and 14:40 [ch. 9:6; Luke 9:33]they did not know what to answer him.
41And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? 14:41 [Luke 22:38] It is enough; 14:41 See ver. 35the hour has come. 14:41 ch. 9:31; 10:33The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
4314:43 For ver. 43-50, see Matt. 26:47-56; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-11And immediately, while he was still speaking, 14:43 ver. 10; Acts 1:16Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”
45And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, 14:45 See John 1:38“Rabbi!” And he 14:45 Luke 7:38, 45; 15:20; Acts 20:37 (Gk.)kissed him.
46And they laid hands on him and seized him.
47But one of those who stood by drew his 14:47 [Luke 22:38]sword and struck the servant14:47 Or bondservant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?
4914:49 [John 8:2]; [Luke 2:46; John 18:20] Day after day I was with you in the temple 14:49 Matt. 21:23; [Matt. 4:23] teaching, and you did not seize me. But 14:49 See ver. 21; Matt. 1:22let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”
5014:50 ver. 27; [Ps. 88:8, 18; John 16:32]And they all left him and fled.
A Young Man Flees
51And a young man followed him, with nothing but 14:51 ch. 15:46; Judg. 14:12; Prov. 31:24a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,
52but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council
5314:53 For ver. 53-65, see Matt. 26:57-68; [John 18:12, 13, 19-24] And 14:53 Luke 22:54, 55they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.
5414:54 [See ver. 53above] And 14:54 [John 18:15] Peter had followed him at a distance, 14:54 [ver. 68] right into 14:54 See Matt. 26:3the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with 14:54 John 7:32; 18:3the guards and 14:54 ver. 67; John 18:18warming himself at the fire.
55Now the chief priests and the whole council14:55 Greek Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.
5614:56 Ps. 27:12; 35:11For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony 14:56 [Deut. 17:6; 19:15]did not agree.
57And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,
5814:58 [Acts 6:14] “We heard him say, 14:58 ch. 15:29; See John 2:19‘I will destroy this temple 14:58 Acts 7:48; 17:24; Heb. 9:11, 24that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, 14:58 2 Cor. 5:1not made with hands.’”
59Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.
60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”14:60 Or Have you no answer to what these men testify against you?
61But 14:61 ch. 15:4, 5; Isa. 53:7; John 19:9he remained silent and made no answer. 14:61 For ver. 61-63, [Luke 22:67-71] Again the high priest asked him, “Are you 14:61 ch. 8:29; See Matt. 1:17the Christ, the Son of 14:61 [Rom. 1:25]the Blessed?”
62And Jesus said, “I am, and 14:62 See Matt. 16:27; 24:30you will see the Son of Man 14:62 Ps. 110:1; Heb. 1:3; [ch. 16:19]seated at the right hand of Power, and 14:62 See Matt. 16:27; 24:30coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63And the high priest 14:63 Num. 14:6; Acts 14:14tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?
64You have heard 14:64 Matt. 9:3; John 10:36his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they 14:64 [Luke 23:50, 51] all condemned him as 14:64 See Lev. 24:16deserving death.
6514:65 Luke 22:63, 64And some began 14:65 ch. 10:34; 15:19; Isa. 50:6to spit on him and 14:65 [Esth. 7:8] to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him 14:65 Matt. 5:39; [Acts 23:2]with blows.
Peter Denies Jesus
6614:66 For ver. 66-72, see Matt. 26:69-75; Luke 22:55-62; John 18:16-18, 25-27And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,
67and seeing Peter 14:67 ver. 54warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”
68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway14:68 Or forecourt and 14:68 ver. 30, 72the rooster crowed.14:68 Some manuscripts omit and the rooster crowed
69And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”
70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”
72And immediately the rooster crowed 14:72 ver. 68a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, 14:72 ver. 30“Before the rooster crows twice, you will 14:72 [Acts 3:13, 14]deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.14:72 Or And when he had thought about it, he wept
