The Plot to Kill Jesus
114:1 For ver. 1, 2, see Matt. 26:2-5; Luke 22:1, 2It was now two days before 14:1 See John 6:4the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes 14:1 John 11:53; See Matt. 21:46were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,
2for they said, “Not during the feast, 14:2 Matt. 27:24lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
314:3 For ver. 3-9, see Matt. 26:6-13; John 12:1-8; [Luke 7:37-39] And while he was at 14:3 Matt. 21:17; John 11:18Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,14:3 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13 as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?
5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii14:5 A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer and 14:5 [John 13:29] given to the poor.” And they 14:5 John 11:33, 38 (Gk.)scolded her.
6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7For 14:7 Deut. 15:11you always have the poor with you, and whenever 14:7 [2 Cor. 9:7] you want, you can do good for them. But 14:7 ch. 2:20; See John 7:33you will not always have me.
814:8 [ch. 12:43; Luke 21:3; 2 Cor. 8:12] She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand 14:8 John 19:40for burial.
9And truly, I say to you, wherever 14:9 [Matt. 24:14] the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told 14:9 Acts 10:4in memory of her.”
Judas to Betray Jesus

11And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to 14:11 See Matt. 20:18, 19betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples

13And he sent 14:13 [ch. 11:1]two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,
14and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 14:14 See John 11:28‘The Teacher says, Where is 14:14 Luke 2:7 (Gk.)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
15And he will show you 14:15 [Acts 1:13]a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”
16And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

19They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”
20He said to them, “It is 14:20 ver. 10one of the twelve, 14:20 [See ver. 18above]one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.
21For the Son of Man goes 14:21 ver. 49; ch. 9:12; Luke 18:31; 24:25, 27, 46; Acts 17:2, 3; 26:22, 23; 1 Cor. 15:3; 1 Pet. 1:10, 11as it is written of him, but 14:21 Matt. 18:7woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! 14:21 [See John 17:12]It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Institution of the Lord’s Supper

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

37And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?

40And again he came and found them sleeping, for 14:40 Luke 9:32their eyes were very heavy, and 14:40 [ch. 9:6; Luke 9:33]they did not know what to answer him.
41And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? 14:41 [Luke 22:38] It is enough; 14:41 See ver. 35the hour has come. 14:41 ch. 9:31; 10:33The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

44Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”
45And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, 14:45 See John 1:38“Rabbi!” And he 14:45 Luke 7:38, 45; 15:20; Acts 20:37 (Gk.)kissed him.
46And they laid hands on him and seized him.
47But one of those who stood by drew his 14:47 [Luke 22:38]sword and struck the servant14:47 Or bondservant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?

A Young Man Flees
51And a young man followed him, with nothing but 14:51 ch. 15:46; Judg. 14:12; Prov. 31:24a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,
52but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council

55Now the chief priests and the whole council14:55 Greek Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.

57And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,

59Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.
60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”14:60 Or Have you no answer to what these men testify against you?

62And Jesus said, “I am, and 14:62 See Matt. 16:27; 24:30you will see the Son of Man 14:62 Ps. 110:1; Heb. 1:3; [ch. 16:19]seated at the right hand of Power, and 14:62 See Matt. 16:27; 24:30coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63And the high priest 14:63 Num. 14:6; Acts 14:14tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?
64You have heard 14:64 Matt. 9:3; John 10:36his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they 14:64 [Luke 23:50, 51] all condemned him as 14:64 See Lev. 24:16deserving death.
6514:65 Luke 22:63, 64And some began 14:65 ch. 10:34; 15:19; Isa. 50:6to spit on him and 14:65 [Esth. 7:8] to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him 14:65 Matt. 5:39; [Acts 23:2]with blows.
Peter Denies Jesus

67and seeing Peter 14:67 ver. 54warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”

69And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”
70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”
