3Then22:3–6 Mt 26:14–16; Mk 14:10–11 Satan entered Judas,22:3 Jn 13:2,27; Ac 5:3 called Iscariot,22:3 Lk 6:16 who was numbered among the Twelve.
4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police22:4 Lk 22:52; Ac 4:1; 5:24,26; 16:20,22,35–36,38 how he could hand him over22:4 Mk 9:31 to them.
5They were glad and agreed to give him silver.22:5 Or money
6So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present.
Preparation for Passover
7Then22:7–13 Mt 26:17–19; Mk 14:12–16 the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.22:7 Ex 12:21; 1Co 5:7
9“Where do you want us to prepare it?” they asked him.
10 “Listen,” he said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters.
11Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?”’
The First Lord’s Supper
15Then he said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16For I tell you, I will not eat it again22:16 Other mss omit again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”22:16 Lk 14:15; Rv 19:9
17Then he took a cup,22:17–20 Mt 26:26–29; Mk 14:22–25; 1Co 11:23–25 and after giving thanks,22:17 Mt 14:19; 15:36 he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.
18For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
20In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant22:20 Ex 24:8; Jr 31:31; Zch 9:11; 1Co 11:25; 2Co 3:6; Heb 7:22; 8:8,13; 9:15; 12:24; 13:20 in my blood,22:20 1Co 10:16 which is poured out for you.22:19–20 Other mss omit which is given for you (v. 19) through the end of v. 20

The Dispute over Greatness
24Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.22:24 Mk 9:34; Lk 1:32
25But he said to them,22:25–27 Mt 20:25–28; Mk 10:42–45 “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called22:25 Or them call themselves ‘Benefactors.’
26It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest,22:26 Lk 9:48; 1Pt 5:3 and whoever leads, like the one serving.
27For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.22:27 Mt 20:28; Jn 13:1–17

Be Ready for Trouble
“Not a thing,” they said.
36Then he said to them, “But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one.
38“Lord,” they said, “look, here are two swords.”
“That is enough!” he told them.
The Prayer in the Garden
39He went out and made his way22:39 Mt 26:30; Mk 14:26; Lk 4:30; Jn 18:1 as usual22:39 Lk 21:37 to the Mount of Olives,22:39 Mt 21:1 and the disciples followed him.

45When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.
46“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation.”
Judas’s Betrayal of Jesus
47While22:47–53 Mt 26:47–56; Mk 14:43–50; Jn 18:3–12 he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him,
48but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”
50Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.
51But Jesus responded, “No more of this!” And touching his ear, he healed him.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?22:52 Lit as against a thief, or a bandit
Peter Denies His Lord
54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter22:54 Mt 26:58; Mk 14:54; Jn 18:15 was following at a distance.
55They22:55–62 Mt 26:69–75; Mk 14:66–72; Jn 18:16–18,25–27 lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard22:55 Mt 26:3 and sat down together, and Peter sat among them.
56When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with him too.”
57But he denied it: “Woman, I don’t know him.”
58After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter said.
59About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.”
60But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.22:61 Mk 10:21 So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”22:61 Lk 22:31–34; Ac 3:13–14
62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten

But he said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe.
68And if I ask you, you will not answer.
71“Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from his mouth?”
