Jesus Prays for Himself

1Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son17:1 Jn 5:19; Heb 1:2may glorify you,17:1 Jn 12:28

7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you,

8because I have given them the words you gave me.17:8 Jn 14:24They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you.17:8 Jn 5:43; 13:3They have believed that you sent me.

9“I pray17:9 Lit ask (throughout this passage)for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me,17:9 Rm 9:11because they are yours.

10Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine,17:10 Jn 16:15and I am glorified in them.

12While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. 13Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them.

14I have given them your word. The world hated17:14 Lk 6:22,27; 19:14them because they are not of the world,17:14 Jn 15:19just as I am not of the world.17:14 Jn 8:23; 18:36

15I am not praying that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.17:15 2Th 3:3

16They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.17:16 Jn 18:36; 1Jn 4:17

19I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20“I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word.

21May they all be one,17:21 Jn 11:52; 17:11as you, Father, are in me and I am in you.17:21 1Jn 2:24; 5:20May they also be17:21 Other mss add onein us, so that the world may believe you sent me.

24“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,17:24 Jn 12:26so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation.

25Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you,17:25 Mt 11:27; Lk 10:22and they have known that you sent me.

26I made your name17:26 Jn 10:25known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them.”17:26 1Jn 4:4
