Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel,“ surely Moab will become like Sodom, the Ammonites like Gomorrah— a place of weeds and salt pits, a wasteland forever. The remnant of my people will plunder them; the survivors of my nation will inherit their land.”

So Moab will become like Sodom,” announces the Lord who rules over all.“ Ammon will be like Gomorrah. Weeds and salt pits will cover those countries. They will be dry and empty deserts forever. Those who are still left alive among my people will take all their valuable things. So they will receive those lands as their own. And that is just as sure as I am alive.” The Lord is the God of Israel.

Therefore, as I live,” declares the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,“ Moab shall become like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”

Now, as surely as I live,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,“ Moab and Ammon will be destroyed— destroyed as completely as Sodom and Gomorrah. Their land will become a place of stinging nettles, salt pits, and eternal desolation. The remnant of my people will plunder them and take their land.”

Therefore, as I live— this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel— Moab will be like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah: a place overgrown with weeds, a salt pit, and a perpetual wasteland. The remnant of my people will plunder them; the remainder of my nation will dispossess them.

Indeed, the grass is withered, the new growth has died, There is no greenery.Therefore the abundance which they have acquired and stored up, They carry it off over the brook of Arabim.For the cry of distress has gone around the territory of Moab, Its wailing goes as far as Eglaim and its howling to Beer elim.For the waters of Dimon are full of blood; I will certainly bring added woes upon Dimon, A lion upon the fugitives of Moab and the remnant of the land.

They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines on the west; Together they will plunder the people of the east; They will possess Edom and Moab, And the sons of Ammon will be subject to them.

‘ All its land is brimstone and salt, burned debris, unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows on it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’

Therefore he retains his flavor, And his aroma has not changed.Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ when I will send to him those who tip vessels, and they will tip him over, and they will pour out his vessels and smash his jars.And Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.How can you say,‘ We are warriors, And men competent for battle’?Moab has been destroyed and men have gone up to his cities; His choicest young men have also gone down to the slaughter,” Declares the King, whose name is the Lord of armies.“ The disaster of Moab will soon come, And his catastrophe has hurried quickly.Mourn for him, all you who live around him, And all of you who know his name; Say,‘ How the mighty scepter has been broken, A staff of splendor!’Come down from your glory And sit on the parched ground, O daughter living in Dibon, For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you, He has ruined your strongholds.Stand by the road and keep watch, You inhabitant of Aroer; Ask him who flees and her who escapes And say,‘ What has happened?’Moab has been put to shame, for it has been shattered. Your tendrils stretched across the sea, They reached to the sea of Jazer; Upon your summer fruits and your grape harvest The destroyer has fallen.So joy and rejoicing are removed From the fruitful field, and from the land of Moab. Therefore they have lost the abundance it produced.For every head is shaved bald, and every beard cut short; there are gashes on all the hands, and sackcloth around the waists.On all the housetops of Moab and in its public squares there is mourning everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable vessel,” declares the Lord.“ How shattered it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back— he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an object of terror to all around him.”For this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, one will fly swiftly like an eagle And spread out his wings against Moab.Kerioth has been captured And the strongholds have been seized, So the hearts of the warriors of Moab on that day Will be like the heart of a woman in labor.Moab will be destroyed from being a people Because he has become arrogant toward the Lord.Terror, pit, and snare are coming upon you, Inhabitant of Moab,” declares the Lord.“ The one who flees from the terror Will fall into the pit, And the one who climbs up out of the pit Will be caught in the snare; For I will bring upon her, upon Moab, The year of their punishment,” declares the Lord.“ In the shadow of Heshbon The fugitives stand without strength; For a fire has spread out from Heshbon And a flame from the midst of Sihon, And it has devoured the forehead of Moab And the scalps of the loud revelers.Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh have perished; For your sons have been taken away captive, And your daughters into captivity.Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab In the latter days,” declares the Lord. This is the extent of the judgment on Moab.Concerning the sons of Ammon. This is what the Lord says:“ Does Israel have no sons? Or has he no heirs? Why then has Malcam taken possession of Gad, And his people settled in its cities?Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ When I will cause an alarm of war to be heard Against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; And it will become a desolate heap, And her towns will be set on fire. Then Israel will take possession of his possessors,” Says the Lord.“ Wail, Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed! Cry out, daughters of Rabbah, Put on sackcloth and mourn, And move about inside the walls; For Malcam will go into exile Together with his priests and his leaders.How you boast about the valleys! Your valley is flowing away, You backsliding daughter Who trusts in her treasures, saying,‘ Who can come against me?’Behold, I am going to bring terror upon you,” Declares the Lord God of armies,“ From all directions around you; And you will be driven away one after another, With no one to gather the fugitives together.But afterward I will restore The fortunes of the sons of Ammon,” Declares the Lord.

For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain, And Moab will be trampled down in his place As straw is trampled down in the water of a manure pile.

As I live,” declares the King, Whose name is the Lord of armies,“ One certainly shall come who is like Tabor among the mountains, Or like Carmel by the sea.

Egypt will become a wasteland, And Edom will become a desolate wilderness, Because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed innocent blood.But Judah will be inhabited forever, And Jerusalem for all generations.

Its streams will be turned into pitch, And its loose earth into brimstone, And its land will become burning pitch.It will not be extinguished night or day; Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation it will be desolate; None will pass through it forever and ever.But pelican and hedgehog will possess it, And owl and raven will dwell in it; And He will stretch over it the line of desolation And the plumb line of emptiness.Its nobles— there is no one there Whom they may proclaim king— And all its officials will be nothing.Thorns will come up in its fortified towers, Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities; It will also be a haunt of jackals And a habitat of ostriches.

And the coast will be For the remnant of the house of Judah, They will drive sheep to pasture on it. In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening; For the Lord their God will care for them And restore their fortunes.

however, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord.

As when God overthrew Sodom And Gomorrah with its neighbors,” declares the Lord,“ No one will live there, Nor will anyone of mankind reside in it.

The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to frighten them.”

For it is written:“ As I live, says the Lord, to Me every knee will bow, And every tongue will give praise to God.”

This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead In order to enlarge their borders.So I will kindle a fire on the wall of Rabbah, And it will consume her citadels Amid war cries on the day of battle, And amid a storm on the day of tempest.Their king will go into exile, He and his princes together,” says the Lord.This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.So I will send fire upon Moab And it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; And Moab will die amid the panic of battle, Amid war cries and the sound of a trumpet.I will also eliminate the judge from her midst And slay all her leaders with him,” says the Lord.

Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah from the Lord out of heaven,and He overthrew those cities, and all the surrounding area, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

Flocks will lie down in her midst, All animals that range in herds; Both the pelican and the hedgehog Will spend their nights in the tops of her pillars; Birds will sing in the window, Devastation will be on the threshold; For He has uncovered the cedar work.

And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, Nor will shepherds allow their flocks to lie down there.

Then you will know that I am the Lord.”For this is what the Lord God says:“ Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, and have rejoiced with all the malice in your soul against the land of Israel,therefore, behold, I have reached out with My hand against you and I will give you as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and eliminate you from the lands. I will exterminate you. So you will know that I am the Lord.”‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Moab and Seir say,‘ Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations,’therefore, behold, I am going to deprive the flank of Moab of its cities, of its cities which are on its frontiers, the glory of the land, Beth jeshimoth, Baal meon, and Kiriathaim;and I will give it as a possession along with the sons of Ammon to the people of the east, so that the sons of Ammon will not be remembered among the nations.So I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord.”‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,”therefore this is what the Lord God says:“ I will also reach out with My hand against Edom and eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from Teman even to Dedan they will fall by the sword.And I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Because the Philistines have acted in revenge, and have taken vengeance with malice in their souls to destroy with everlasting hostility,”therefore this is what the Lord God says:“ Behold, I am going to reach out with My hand against the Philistines and eliminate the Cherethites; and I will destroy the remnant of the seacoast.I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they will know that I am the Lord, when I inflict My vengeance on them.” ’ ”
