“ You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall lie with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it; you shall plant a vineyard, but shall not gather its grapes.

Your wealth and your treasures I will give as plunder without price, Because of all your sins, Throughout your territories.

You shall plant vineyards and tend them, but you shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them.

I will give it as plunder Into the hands of strangers, And to the wicked of the earth as spoil; And they shall defile it.

For a voice of wailing is heard from Zion:‘ How we are plundered! We are greatly ashamed, Because we have forsaken the land, Because we have been cast out of our dwellings.’”

In the same day I will punish All those who leap over the threshold, Who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

The lion has come up from his thicket, And the destroyer of nations is on his way. He has gone forth from his place To make your land desolate. Your cities will be laid waste, Without inhabitant.

Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants.And it shall be: As with the people, so with the priest; As with the servant, so with his master; As with the maid, so with her mistress; As with the buyer, so with the seller; As with the lender, so with the borrower; As with the creditor, so with the debtor.The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered, For the Lord has spoken this word.

Woe to those who join house to house; They add field to field, Till there is no place Where they may dwell alone in the midst of the land!In my hearing the Lord of hosts said,“ Truly, many houses shall be desolate, Great and beautiful ones, without inhabitant.

‘ They will throw their silver into the streets, And their gold will be like refuse; Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them In the day of the wrath of the Lord; They will not satisfy their souls, Nor fill their stomachs, Because it became their stumbling block of iniquity.

And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you.

“ I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a den of jackals. I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.”

Then I said,“ Lord, how long?” And He answered:“ Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, The houses are without a man, The land is utterly desolate,

“ Many rulers have destroyed My vineyard, They have trodden My portion underfoot; They have made My pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.They have made it desolate; Desolate, it mourns to Me; The whole land is made desolate, Because no one takes it to heart.The plunderers have come On all the desolate heights in the wilderness, For the sword of the Lord shall devour From one end of the land to the other end of the land; No flesh shall have peace.They have sown wheat but reaped thorns; They have put themselves to pain but do not profit. But be ashamed of your harvest Because of the fierce anger of the Lord.”

Destruction upon destruction is cried, For the whole land is plundered. Suddenly my tents are plundered, And my curtains in a moment.
