And a people of mixed origins will live in Ashdod, And I will eliminate the pride of the Philistines.

“ A mixed race shall settle in Ashdod, And I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.

And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.

“ Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.”

They will receive the wages of their pride, for they have scoffed at the people of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has a day of reckoning. He will punish the proud and mighty and bring down everything that is exalted.He will cut down the tall cedars of Lebanon and all the mighty oaks of Bashan.He will level all the high mountains and all the lofty hills.He will break down every high tower and every fortified wall.He will destroy all the great trading ships and every magnificent vessel.Human pride will be humbled, and human arrogance will be brought down. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day of judgment.

God gives some people great wealth and honor and everything they could ever want, but then he doesn’t give them the chance to enjoy these things. They die, and someone else, even a stranger, ends up enjoying their wealth! This is meaningless— a sickening tragedy.

In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for“ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless!So I gave up in despair, questioning the value of all my hard work in this world.Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn’t worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy.

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has done it to destroy your pride and bring low all earth’s nobility.

What sorrow awaits the proud city of Samaria— the glorious crown of the drunks of Israel. It sits at the head of a fertile valley, but its glorious beauty will fade like a flower. It is the pride of a people brought down by wine.
