因為在那些日子以前，人作工是沒有工價的，牲畜也是這樣，並且因有敵人的緣故，人出入就沒有平安，我也使眾人互相攻擊。

Before that time there were no wages for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor.

Before the work was started again, there was no pay for the people. And there was no money to rent animals. People could not go about their business safely because of their enemies. I had turned all of them against one another.

For before those days there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor.

Before the work on the Temple began, there were no jobs and no money to hire people or animals. No traveler was safe from the enemy, for there were enemies on all sides. I had turned everyone against each other.

那時你們怎樣呢？有人到穀堆來，想得兩百公斤穀，卻只得一百公斤；有人到榨酒池去，想從酒槽得一百公升酒，卻只得四十公升。耶和華說：‘我用旱風、霉爛和冰雹擊打你們，和你們手裡的一切工作，你們還是不歸向我。你們要反省，從今日起回想過往，就是自九月二十四日起，從耶和華殿的奠基日開始，你們要反省：

我要激動埃及人去攻擊埃及人，他們就相爭起來，各人攻擊自己的兄弟，各人攻擊自己的鄰舍，城攻擊城；國攻擊國。

如果他們被仇敵擄去，就是在那裡，我必命令刀劍殺死他們；我必定睛在他們身上，降禍不降福。”

“你們不要以為我來了，是要給地上帶來和平；我並沒有帶來和平，卻帶來刀劍，因為我來了是要叫人分裂：人與父親作對，女兒與母親作對，媳婦與婆婆作對，人的仇敵就是自己的家人。

那時，出入的人都沒有平安，因為各國的居民都遭遇動亂。這國攻擊那國，這城攻擊那城，因為神用各樣災難使他們紛亂。但你們要堅強，不要膽怯，因為你們所行的，必有賞報。”

在打水的地方分開羊群的人發聲，在那裡人必歌頌耶和華公義的作為，就是他在以色列中的農村所行公義的作為；那時，耶和華的子民下到城門口。

“看哪！我要差人去叫許多漁夫來，捕捉以色列人；然後我要差人去叫許多獵人來，從各大山、小山和巖石的裂縫裡，獵取他們。”這是耶和華的宣告。

在亞拿的兒子珊迦的時候，在雅億的日子，大道無人行走，行路的人繞道而行。以色列中的農村消失了，消失了，直到我底波拉興起，直到我以色列的母親興起。

你們撒的種多，收割的卻少；你們吃，卻吃不飽；你們喝，卻喝不足；你們穿衣服，卻穿不暖；得工錢的，卻把工錢放在破袋裡。”萬軍之耶和華這樣說：“你們要反省自己的行為。你們要上山取木材，建造殿宇；我必因此喜悅，並且得榮耀。”耶和華說：“你們期望豐收，反倒歉收；你們收到家裡的，我就吹去。”為甚麼呢？萬軍之耶和華說：“因為我的殿宇荒廢，你們各人卻為自己的房屋奔馳。所以，因你們的緣故，天就不降甘露，地也不出土產。我叫乾旱臨到大地、群山、五穀、新酒、新油、地上的出產、人畜和人手勞碌得來的一切。”
