至於凡俗的空談，你總要遠避着；因為那些空談的人必進到更不敬虔的地步；

不意向着猶太人的荒唐傳說和俗人的誡命，那轉離真理之人的誡命。

至於凡俗的和老婦常談的荒唐傳說，你總要拒絕聽信。你要為着敬虔之事上操練自己。

論到祭偶像之物、我們曉得「我們都有知識」。但知識能自吹自大，惟獨愛能建立人。

我往馬其頓去的時候，曾勸你繼續住在以弗所；好囑咐某某人不要傳別樣的教義，也不要意向着荒唐的傳說和無窮的族譜；這一類的事只能激起空論，無補於上帝在信仰上所作的安排——現在我也這樣勸你。這囑咐的終極乃是愛，從潔淨的心和純善的良知、跟無偽的信心所發生的。有些人不以這幾樣為正鵠，就偏向虛妄的談論，想要做教法師，卻不但不了悟明白自己所說的話，而且不明白所堅確講論定的事。

假使我有神言傳講的才能，又明白一切奧祕、一切知識；假使我有全備的信、能夠移山，卻沒有愛，我就算不了甚麼。
