其人選務求品格純粹、無瑕可指、一婦之夫、兒女奉主、無蕩檢不馴之稱。

An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.

An elder must be without blame. He must be faithful to his wife. His children must be believers. They must not give anyone a reason to say that they are wild and don’t obey.

For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

In that day I will perform against Eli all[ things] which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

Whoso keepeth the law[ is] a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous[ men] shameth his father.

Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded[ in my] habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed[ that] thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled[ at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane,[ or] an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.

And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.
