I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

“ Since they refused to listen when I called to them, I would not listen when they called to me, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.

“ When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.

For the Lord has called you back from your grief— as though you were a young wife abandoned by her husband,” says your God.“ For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great compassion I will take you back.In a burst of anger I turned my face away for a little while. But with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.

I will wait for the Lord, who has turned away from the descendants of Jacob. I will put my hope in him.

And though I cry and shout, he has shut out my prayers.

I pray to you, O Lord, my rock. Do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you are silent, I might as well give up and die.

Where has your lover gone, O woman of rare beauty? Which way did he turn so we can help you find him?

A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading,“ Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away.“ Tell her to go away,” they said.“ She is bothering us with all her begging.”Then Jesus said to the woman,“ I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep— the people of Israel.”But she came and worshiped him, pleading again,“ Lord, help me!”Jesus responded,“ It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”She replied,“ That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”“ Dear woman,” Jesus said to her,“ your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.

Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.

I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me.

Why was no one there when I came? Why didn’t anyone answer when I called? Is it because I have no power to rescue? No, that is not the reason! For I can speak to the sea and make it dry up! I can turn rivers into deserts covered with dying fish.

Yet they act so pious! They come to the Temple every day and seem delighted to learn all about me. They act like a righteous nation that would never abandon the laws of its God. They ask me to take action on their behalf, pretending they want to be near me.

My lover tried to unlatch the door, and my heart thrilled within me.

When they come with their flocks and herds to offer sacrifices to the Lord, they will not find him, because he has withdrawn from them.

I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude

My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O Lord; I lift my hands to you for mercy.Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? InterludeCan those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?O Lord, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.O Lord, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?

O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, how long will you be angry with our prayers?

He asked the Lord what he should do, but the Lord refused to answer him, either by dreams or by sacred lots or by the prophets.

In that day you will sing:“ I will praise you, O Lord! You were angry with me, but not anymore. Now you comfort me.

Then I will return to my place until they admit their guilt and turn to me. For as soon as trouble comes, they will earnestly search for me.”

And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.

One night as I lay in bed, I yearned for my lover. I yearned for him, but he did not come.So I said to myself,“ I will get up and roam the city, searching in all its streets and squares. I will search for the one I love.” So I searched everywhere but did not find him.

At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind:“ Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.

“ No!” the king said.“ Who asked your opinion, you sons of Zeruiah! If the Lord has told him to curse me, who are you to stop him?”

“ Look!” he exclaimed to his brothers.“ My money has been returned; it’s here in my sack!” Then their hearts sank. Trembling, they said to each other,“ What has God done to us?”

Your favor, O Lord, made me as secure as a mountain. Then you turned away from me, and I was shattered.

For I will not fight against you forever; I will not always be angry. If I were, all people would pass away— all the souls I have made.
