the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises.

They are the people of Israel. They have been adopted as God’s children. God’s glory belongs to them. So do the covenants. They received the law. They were taught to worship in the temple. They were given the promises.

They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises.

爾應恆念昔時爾本與基督相隔、處於義塞社會之外、於盟約恩諾為局外人、在世無所仰望、不識天主。

微意啟雅谷。玄謨示義塞。

然則天主果食其言矣乎？無是理也！蓋出自義塞者、非必盡為義塞人；

夫舊約固亦有其敬禮之儀式、與夫有形之聖所也。

蓋此恩許、原為爾曹、為爾子孫、以及我天主所召遠方之人也。』

蓋爾所受者、非畏首畏尾之奴隸情緒；爾所受者、乃為呼爺喚父之兒女精神也。

曰：所受之恩、不勝縷述、而其最著者、厥為天主以聖言託付其手也。

今耶穌所掌大司祭之職、實非若輩所得同日而語；正如彼所為仲介之盟約、與夫斯約所根據之恩諾、悉非舊緒所得而比擬也。使舊約已屬完美無缺、應無另立新約之餘地；顧天主嘗責先人曰：『主曰：「時將至、爾其拭目視！吾與義塞及猶太、亟欲訂立新盟約。曩者吾攜厥祖出埃及、亦有所締結。若輩不守吾約遭擯棄、新約迥與舊約異！」主曰：「時既至、當與義塞約如次欲將吾誡命、置彼腔子裏；真諦與妙道、深深銘腑肺；我為彼主宰、彼為我子民

再設一喻、爾其聽之。有家主植葡萄園、範以籬、掘酒池、建樓閣、租之園戶、而遠遊國外。

內帷後更有一幕曰閟帷、

選民被擄。紛紛受戮。

救主崛興、大維之府；先知夙言、今乃見符；拯我於敵、脫我於侮；用示矜憐、於我列祖；以懷聖約、以踐誓許。亞伯漢者、吾族之父、仁主許之、厥裔是護；既脫諸敵、俾我無懼、無懼如何、安心事主；兢兢業業、聖道是步；

天主待吾族。恩遇豈云薄。但能抱精一。莫不承優渥。

終不為已甚。怒中留餘恩。

望主顯大能。莫令僕向隅。

爾曹乃先知之後；天主與我祖立約、亦為爾曹。天主曾語亞伯漢曰：「普天生靈、咸賴爾裔而獲福。」天主立子、先以福爾、欲爾自反、而脫罪惡耳。』

扶植僕義塞、舊恩依然在；每許我列祖、恩諾終不改；矜憐亞伯漢、苗裔永見愛。』

蓋摩西所授者律法耳、至妙寵真諦、則由耶穌基督而溥施。

吾儕報爾佳音：天主嚮所許諾於吾祖者、已踐履於吾人。蓋天主已令耶穌復活矣。聖詠第二首所云：「汝乃吾子、誕於今日。」此之謂也。

惟仁為安宅。惟義乃天梯。

明發不能寐。耿耿懷所天。如飢又如渴。心田枯以乾。

耶穌見納大那來訪、指之曰：『此誠義塞人、心無詭譎者！』

蓋此等飲食盥滌之規、僅屬外表儀式、舊時所設、而有待乎革新者也。

方天主之授恩諾於亞伯漢也、憑己而誓曰：『吾必介爾景福、錫爾多子。』其所以憑己而誓者、以無更大者足憑耳。亞伯漢乃寧靜恆忍以待、卒獲所諾。夫人之立誓、必憑大於己者、所以昭慎重而杜爭議也。天主之立誓、亦欲昭示承恩諾者、以其所諾乃一成不變云耳。
