But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it,“ Why have you made me like this?”

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus?

How foolish can you be? He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the clay! Should the created thing say of the one who made it,“ He didn’t make me”? Does a jar ever say,“ The potter who made me is stupid”?

“ What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying,‘ Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim,‘ How clumsy can you be?’How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father,‘ Why was I born?’ or if it said to its mother,‘ Why did you make me this way?’”This is what the Lord says— the Holy One of Israel and your Creator:“ Do you question what I do for my children? Do you give me orders about the work of my hands?

And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.

So why are you bringing a charge against him? Why say he does not respond to people’s complaints?

“ Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?”

These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.

Won’t you ever stop blowing hot air? What makes you keep on talking?

How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?

“ Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.

No one can tell him what to do, or say to him,‘ You have done wrong.’

Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’

“ I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you.You asked,‘ Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I— and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me.You said,‘ Listen and I will speak! You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.

So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
