蓋目前所受之區區苦痛、所以為吾人作成無量之榮福也。第吾人所仰慕者、非形而下之事、乃形而上之事；蓋形而下者暫而不久、而形而上者則永生靡暨也。

爾今遭受困辱、天主必賜爾於主耶穌自天顯示之日、與吾儕同受康寧；公義所在、有不得不然者焉。主之臨也、將有無數大能天神衛之、於烈燄中行施報應。凡不識天主、不願服膺吾主耶穌基督之福音者、皆將受刑、必至永遠沉淪、自絕於主之聖顏及其威光。主臨之日、一切諸聖、皆當映其光輝、凡信之者、皆當彰其大德；是乃吾等之所傳、而爾等之所信也。因此吾儕不輟為爾祈禱、求我天主使爾無忝聖召；運其宏能、成爾善志；施其化工、充爾信德：庶幾我主耶穌之聖名、因爾見榮、爾亦得仰賴我天主及主耶穌基督之恩、因彼而見榮焉。

故宜振作爾心、昭昭惺惺、凝神壹志、以望耶穌基督臨格時所攜之聖寵。

基督乃吾人之真生命、一俟基督之顯、爾將與之同顯於光榮之中。

爾等為予之故、而被人詬詈迫辱、多方誣衊者、斯為真福、是宜歡欣踴躍、灑然而樂。蓋爾之天爵大矣。前輩先知被人迫辱、亦猶是耳。

寧願與天主之民同受困苦、不願於須臾之間與罪人同享逸樂。在摩西之心目中、基督之垢辱、實富於埃及之寶庫也。何則、其所見者大。其所望者遠也。

其召爾也、以吾儕之傳福音為因緣、而以爾等得沾吾主耶穌基督之光榮為目的。

我乃一長老也、曾目擊基督之受苦蒙難、且於來日將顯之光榮、預有其分焉。吾欲憑此資格、為爾中任長老者進一言。

再如婦人之子、死而復生、重得團樂；亦有人備受苦刑、不求苟生、俾獲美滿之復活；
