For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

蓋我知我形軀中無善、雖志於善、而未能行也、

亦知我情欲中無懿德、因好之者雖在前、而行其善者不得也、

我亦知我中、即在我肉體中、無有善、雖願為善、而為善不得、

吾知寓吾肉身之內者、實無片善可稱也。為善之願、未始無有；而為善之力、則未能有也。

I know there is nothing good in my desires controlled by sin. I want to do what is good, but I can’t.

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!

Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees.

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

“ What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water!

for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come— sexual immorality, theft, murder,adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart:“ Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions— it is by grace you have been saved.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation— but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

For out of the heart come evil thoughts— murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death.

Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!

How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure?

I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands.

For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do— this I keep on doing.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factionsand envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding.

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
