For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

蓋恃法而行者、無人得稱義於上帝前、法第使人知罪耳、

故無人由遵行律法、得稱義於天主前、蓋由律法可知罪耳、○

蓋徒恃遵行律法、無人能稱義於天主之前；惟因法而知罪耳。

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

So no one will be considered right with God by obeying the law. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

because by the works of the Law none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes knowledge of sin.

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.

For no one will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law[ is] the knowledge of sin.

For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”

Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight— something the law of Moses could never do.

So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.

For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it.( The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!)

For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law— I stopped trying to meet all its requirements— so that I might live for God.

Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.

God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.

Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said,“ You must not covet.”But sin used this command to arouse all kinds of covetous desires within me! If there were no law, sin would not have that power.At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life,

he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say,“ Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say,“ It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says,“ It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures,“ Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

Don’t put your servant on trial, for no one is innocent before you.

Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break.

How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.And so it happened just as the Scriptures say:“ Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.

Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive?

Look, God does not even trust the angels. Even the heavens are not absolutely pure in his sight.

But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.

How can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone born of a woman be pure?God is more glorious than the moon; he shines brighter than the stars.
