Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

若夫徒恃律法者、則實處於咒咀之下。經不云乎：『凡不遵行律法之一切規定者、應服咒詛。』

賢者覩此。相顧怡悅。不肖覩此。相顧結舌。

然則吾人視他族果無所勝乎？實無所勝也！蓋無論猶太人與希臘人、其為罪人則一也。此為吾儕向所主張者；

惟望爾明以示我爾既遵守律法、曷一諦審律法之精義乎。

然爾如能順從聖神之靈感、則不復吟呻於律法之下矣。

彼經有云：「人之仇予、非予之辜。」

故於猶太人、吾亦儼然以猶太人自居、所以感化猶太人也。於法內之人、吾亦儼然以法內之人自居、所以感化法內之人也；實則其法無與於我耳。於法外之人、吾亦儼然以法外之人自居、所以感化法外之人也；實則就天主及基督之妙法言之、吾亦法內之人耳。

蓋自有世以來、天主形而上之神性靈德、實可憑其所造之萬物而辨認洞見也。然則世人亦烏得而推諉乎？

耶穌答曰：『爾之律法不云乎：「吾稱爾曹為神。」夫承天主聖言者、且得稱為神、而經文固不可廢也；

曰：所受之恩、不勝縷述、而其最著者、厥為天主以聖言託付其手也。

若輩聞言、自老及幼、一一次第引退、惟留耶穌與婦人立於眾人之前。

庶幾血肉之身、無敢自衒自誇於天主之前。

謂之曰：「友、無禮服安得入此？」其人默然。王乃謂侍者曰：「縛其手足、投之幽獄、必有哀哭切齒者矣。」

舉世莫非罪人、固未有能懷天主之明德者也。

無是理也！即使眾人皆偽、亦不能改天主之真。經云：『主言惟正、睿斷實公、』斯之謂也。

嗟爾蒼生、爾如責人、將無以免責；蓋爾之所責於人者、率皆躬自蹈之；是爾之責人、適足自納於罪耳。夫吾人既明知此等行為、依理應受天主之譴責；

然律法之所以將一切歸納於罪責之下者、正欲使後人篤信耶穌基督之福音、而承受天主之恩諾耳。惟在信德未興之前、吾人則受律法之監護約束、以俟行見啟示之信德。

庶幾諸凡生於律法之下者、悉蒙拯贖、而吾人皆獲得兒女身分。
